What does a free video editor with no watermark mean?
Short answer
DaVinci Resolve's free edition has the most headroom of the free desktop editors: Blackmagic offers it for editing up to Ultra HD at 60 fps in 8-bit. Open-source editors and iMovie (Mac) are the simplest free options. Descript Free adds a watermark and caps export at 720p, and CapCut does not state its rule on its own pages. Rushilo is not free: it costs $19 to $49 once, plus your own AI plan. If you only need cuts, use a free tool.
We make Rushilo, and Rushilo is paid: $19 (1 computer), $29 (3 computers), $49 (5 computers), once. If you edit occasionally, need only trims, or want a full colour suite, install a free tool from this page and skip ours. This page covers desktop editors for Mac and Windows only, with each free limit taken from the vendor's page on October 22, 2026.
“Free” covers three different things, and the difference decides whether you meet a watermark later.
Free and open source
- What it means
- Free to use, funded by donations, no paid tier to upsell
- Examples
- Open-source editors for Mac and Windows
Free edition of a paid product
- What it means
- A real editor with the advanced tools held back for a paid edition
- Examples
- DaVinci Resolve
Freemium
- What it means
- Free to start, with exports, tools or credits gated behind a subscription
- Examples
- Descript, CapCut, Clipchamp
| Kind | What it means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Free and open source | Free to use, funded by donations, no paid tier to upsell | Open-source editors for Mac and Windows |
| Free edition of a paid product | A real editor with the advanced tools held back for a paid edition | DaVinci Resolve |
| Freemium | Free to start, with exports, tools or credits gated behind a subscription | Descript, CapCut, Clipchamp |
Free also costs something that is not money. The open-source editors cost you polish and hand-holding. Resolve costs you a learning curve, and a computer with a capable graphics card helps. Freemium tools cost you a decision later: the export that looked fine in preview carries a watermark, or the tool you needed sits behind a subscription. And a cloud tool such as Descript means your footage is uploaded, which some projects cannot allow. None of these is a reason to avoid free; they are the things to check first.
How to test any free editor in ten minutes: make a short project that uses the exact features you need, such as captions, a title, a transition or a template, export it at the resolution you will publish, and watch the file, not the preview. That one export tells you more than any feature list, including this one.
Which video editor is 100% free with no watermark?
The free-forever group is the open-source editors. They have no company selling a paid edition, so there is nothing to gate. One open-source editor's site says you can “edit without subscriptions, watermarks, or project limits”; the others we read do not mention a watermark either way. They run on Mac and Windows, and the trade is polish: interfaces are plainer and support is community based. Some open-source editors use copyleft licences, which matters only if you plan to modify the software.
On Mac, Apple's iMovie is listed as free on the Mac App Store. It is Mac only, and simple by design. We read the Mac listing on October 20 and did not re-read it on October 22, so check the macOS minimum before you download.
Our advice for most people comparing free options is to try an open-source editor or iMovie for an afternoon before installing anything larger. If the simple tool does the job, you are done and you paid nothing, in money or in hours of learning. If you hit a wall, such as multi-track audio, colour correction or a project that grows past a few clips, move up to Resolve rather than to a freemium tool, because the limits Blackmagic lists for the free edition are about quality settings such as bit depth and frame rate.
Is DaVinci Resolve 100% free? Which version is free?
The main edition is free; Studio is the paid one. The version simply called DaVinci Resolve, currently 21, is the free download. Blackmagic says the free version works with “virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60fps” in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160, and that it includes multi-user collaboration and HDR grading.
On watermarks: Blackmagic's product page does not mention one for either edition, and it lists none among the free version's limits. We are reporting an absence on the page, not a promise from Blackmagic. Resolve is widely used without one, but we did not export from it.

Older write-ups differ. One popular guide, last updated in October 2024, says the free edition cannot export 10-bit video; Blackmagic's current wording is about 8-bit formats, so use the vendor page. The price of buying Studio is covered in video editors you can buy once.
Is CapCut free on PC without a watermark?
CapCut's desktop editor is free to download. Its desktop page and pricing page state no watermark rule and no export cap, so we cannot tell you either way from CapCut itself. Its Standard vs Pro article lists auto captions, background remover, motion tracking and noise reduction as Pro tools, and a third party reports a watermark when free exports use Pro templates or effects. Treat that as reported, not confirmed.
The desktop page lists Windows 7 or above (Windows 10 recommended) and macOS 10.14 or above. Requirements and plan details have shifted between CapCut pages before, so confirm them before you install. See CapCut for Mac requirements and CapCut pricing and paywall changes. For the cost side, see our CapCut alternative for Mac and Windows.
Is Descript actually free?
Free to start, with a watermark. Descript's pricing page shows the Free plan at $0 with 60 media minutes a month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p export, up to 1 GB per upload, 5 GB of cloud storage and one seat. It lists watermark-free export as “Not included”, so a free export carries a watermark. Descript is a cloud tool, so this is a trial of the workflow more than a free editor. For the paid side, read what Descript really costs.
What about Clipchamp and iMovie?
Clipchamp contradicts itself. Its pricing page says you can export up to 1080p for free with no watermarks, while its no-watermark page says free export is 480p and that 720p and 1080p need premium. We read both on October 22, 2026 and cannot tell you which is current. The only desktop app Clipchamp lists is for Windows; on a Mac it runs in the browser, which is outside this page.
iMovie is Mac only and is the simplest free editor there. If you are on Windows, it is not an option.

Can you edit with AI for free?
Partly. Claude does not edit video alone; it operates a tool, so free AI editing means a free editor plus a model plan. Claude's pricing page lists Claude Code as not included on the Free plan. Blackmagic's 21.1 release adds assistant support for Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, but does not say whether that works in the free edition. Details are in can Claude edit videos, and the bill is worked through in BYOK video editing costs.
Which free editor fits you?
- Mac beginner, simple cuts: iMovie.
- Windows beginner, simple cuts: an open-source editor, or Clipchamp if its free limit suits you.
- Long projects, colour and audio work: DaVinci Resolve free. Stay on the Cut and Edit pages at first.
- Talking head and caption-led video: Descript Free to try, knowing the watermark and 60 minute cap.
- Phone-first or template-led: CapCut, after you check the export preview.
If you outgrow free, video editors you can buy once lists the prices. For where each AI editor runs, see where each Mac AI editor runs its AI.
Where does free stop and Rushilo fit?
We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly. Rushilo is not free. It is a one-time licence for 1, 3 or 5 computers, from $19, with updates included. It ships no AI of its own, so you also pay your AI provider for Claude Code, Codex or an API key. It exports H.264 and AAC MP4 only, has no mobile app and no template library, and the Windows build is not yet code-signed, so Windows shows a SmartScreen warning. All sales are final.
If that is the job you have, Buy Rushilo.
How did we check these limits?
Checked October 22, 2026. We read each vendor's pricing, download or product page and quote the limit as written. We did not install or export from any editor, so we make no claims about speed, quality or what a real export looks like. The iMovie Mac listing was last read on October 20. Where a vendor is silent on watermarks, we say so rather than guess. Prices and limits change, so confirm on the vendor's page before you commit.
Frequently asked questions
Which video editor is 100% free with no watermark?
DaVinci Resolve's free edition is the strongest free desktop editor. Blackmagic offers it as a free download for up to Ultra HD at 60 fps in 8-bit, and its page does not mention a watermark. Open-source editors for Mac and Windows say they have no paywall, and iMovie is free on Mac. Checked October 22, 2026.
Is DaVinci Resolve 100% free?
The main edition is free, Studio is not. Blackmagic says the free version handles 8-bit video at up to 60 fps, up to Ultra HD, with HDR grading and multi-user collaboration. Studio supports 10-bit up to 120 fps and costs $236 (was $295) on October 22, 2026. Studio is a one-time purchase.
Which DaVinci Resolve version is free?
The one simply called DaVinci Resolve, currently version 21, is the free download. DaVinci Resolve Studio is the paid one. Blackmagic's 21.1 release says 21.1 is free to download, but it does not say whether the new Claude and ChatGPT Codex assistant support works in the free edition. Checked October 22, 2026.
Is Descript actually free?
Descript Free costs $0 but is capped: 60 media minutes a month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p export and 1 GB per upload. Its pricing page marks watermark-free export as not included, so free exports carry a watermark. Descript is a cloud subscription tool beyond that. Checked October 22, 2026.
Is CapCut PC free without a watermark?
CapCut's desktop editor is free to download, but the desktop and pricing pages we read state no watermark rule or export cap, and CapCut's help says membership features on a computer need Pro. A third party reports a watermark on Pro templates. Check the export preview first. Checked October 22, 2026.
Does Claude edit videos for free?
Not by itself. Claude does not play or render video; it operates a tool. Claude's Free plan covers chat and connected apps, but the pricing page lists Claude Code as not included, so most agent editing needs a paid plan. A free editor plus a paid model is the real cost. Checked October 22, 2026.
What is the best totally free video editor?
For most Mac and Windows users, DaVinci Resolve's free edition, if you accept a learning curve. iMovie is simpler on Mac. Rushilo is not free: it is $19 once for one computer, and you also pay your own AI provider. Choose it only if you want Claude Code or Codex to do the cutting. We did not test these editors.
What is similar to CapCut but free?
On desktop, DaVinci Resolve's free edition for depth, iMovie for simplicity on Mac, and open-source editors with no paywall. None match CapCut's phone sync or templates. CapCut itself is free to start, with Pro gating some tools. Costs are compared in our CapCut alternative guide. Checked October 22, 2026.
