Is Descript worth it?
Short answer
Descript is worth it if you edit spoken video or audio on a regular schedule and your month fits inside its media hours and AI credits. It is a poor buy if you need offline editing, cinematic control or heavy AI help. Hobbyist is $16 a month billed annually for 10 media hours and 400 credits, Creator is $24 for 30 hours and 800 credits. Prices were checked on October 20, 2026.
We did not test Descript hands-on. This page is built from Descript's published pricing and help pages, public reviews and user posts, all dated below. That means we can do the arithmetic and report what people say, but we cannot tell you how it feels to use. Prices change, so check the checkout page before you pay.
The short decision rule: count the hours of raw footage you import in a typical month, add the AI jobs you expect to run, and match that to a plan. For how transcript editing works in general, see text-based video editing.

Media hours and credits are monthly except where marked. Hobbyist adds watermark-free export and Underlord access; Creator adds the full Underlord and 20 plus AI tools, a stock library and top-ups; Business adds Brand Studio, translation and dubbing in 30 plus languages and priority support. Enterprise is custom. Descript shows dollars with no currency code.
The rules that change the arithmetic, from Descript's help pages:
- Unused minutes and credits do not roll over; allowances reset at renewal.
- Each editor seat adds to one shared pool.
- Imports and recordings count whether or not you transcribe them. Still images count as one second each.
- Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words are capped at 30 credits per file per use. Underlord cost varies and shows in a usage tab after the run.
- Top-ups are for Creator and Business only, expire after 12 months and are used after the monthly allowance. Media: 5 hours for $25, 20 hours for $80, 50 hours for $150. Credits: 350 for $35, 1,000 for $80, 4,000 for $200.
For context, Hobbyist was $12 annual and $19 monthly in the January 9, 2025 snapshot and $16 and $24 in the July 9, 2025 snapshot, unchanged since.
Is Descript worth it for YouTubers?
Verdict
Usually yes for talking-head, tutorial and commentary channels, on Hobbyist if 1080p is enough. No for effects-heavy or gaming edits.
Take four videos a month with 60 minutes of raw footage each. That is 4 of Hobbyist's 10 media hours. If you run Remove Filler Words and Studio Sound once per video at the 30-credit ceiling, that is 60 credits a video, or 240 for the month, inside Hobbyist's 400. Real use may be lower, because 30 is a cap.
The deciding line is resolution. Hobbyist exports 1080p; 4K needs Creator at $24 annual. If your audience watches in 1080p, the cheaper plan holds. The uncertain cost is Underlord, Descript's AI assistant. We cannot give you a credit rate. One r/descript user reported about 100 credits for a single prompt on a 15-minute video, which would make 800 credits roughly eight such prompts. That is one report, not a measured rate. For the method itself, see editing talking-head videos.
Is Descript worth it for podcasters?
Verdict
Often yes for conversational shows, on Hobbyist. Test one real episode on Free before paying.
Four episodes with 90 minutes of raw audio each use 6 of Hobbyist's 10 media hours. Cutting by transcript and removing filler words are the reasons people pick it. One new podcaster on r/podcasting (May 27, 2026) wrote that it was easy: see an “um” or a flubbed sentence and delete it. Another poster raised a complaint worth knowing: they said Descript records voices in stereo with one voice on each side, so they edit by transcript, export to mono and reimport. That is one user's report, and we did not reproduce it.
Descript lists Studio Sound as a feature, but we did not test it and do not rate it here. For the filler and pause cleanup step in any editor, see removing silence and filler words, and video podcasts for the wider workflow.
Is Descript worth it for course makers?
Verdict
Yes on Creator, with a budget for top-ups in heavy build months. Not if you edit while travelling.
A build month of 20 hours of raw footage fits Creator's 30 hours. A heavy month of 45 hours is 15 hours over, which at the 5-hour top-up price is three packs, $75 on top of the $24 plan. Top-ups are not available on Hobbyist, so a course maker who regularly passes 10 hours should start on Creator. Remember allowances do not roll over, so a quiet month does not pay for a loud one.
The other catch is connectivity. Descript's help center says it does not support offline editing, so an instructor editing on a train or in a hotel with poor Wi-Fi is exposed. See online course videos for the production side.
Is Descript worth it for teams?
Verdict
Collaboration is Descript's strength, but the pool is shared, so size the plan to the whole team.
Creator allows 1 to 3 seats and Business up to 5. Each seat adds to one shared pool, so three Creator seats would give roughly 90 media hours and 2,400 credits between them. The pricing page says extra Creator seats are “billed separately” and we could not confirm the per-seat price, so we do not give a team total. Ask Descript, or read the checkout, before you budget. Live collaboration is a real reason to pay; a desktop editor that works from local files does not offer it.
What do users praise and complain about?
Reviews on search results agree on one point: Descript suits talking-head video and podcasts and does not suit cinematic work. Beyond that, the sentiment is mixed. These are individual reports, not measurements.

On Trustpilot we read a TrustScore of 2.6 from 290 reviews on October 20, 2026: 37% gave five stars and 43% gave one star, with 94 reviews in the past 12 months. Trustpilot's own summary lists bugs and export failures, AI tools burning credits and subscription changes as themes.
Descript says more than 6 million creators and teams use it. That is self-reported.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTuber, talking head | 4 videos, 60 min raw each | 4 of 10 | Hobbyist for 1080p; Creator for 4K | $16, or $24 for 4K |
| Podcaster | 4 episodes, 90 min raw each | 6 of 10 | Hobbyist | $16 |
| Course maker | 20 hours raw | 20 of 30 | Creator | $24 |
| Course maker, heavy month | 45 hours raw | 45 against 30 | Creator plus three 5-hour top-ups | $24 plus $75 equals $99 |
| Team of 3 editors | Shared pool | Pool of 90 hours and 2,400 credits | Creator, 3 seats | Per-seat price unconfirmed |
Over a year, one seat is $192 on Hobbyist, $288 on Creator and $600 on Business with annual billing, or $288, $420 and $780 billed monthly. Hobbyist's 400 credits cover 13 applications of a 30-credit tool and Creator's 800 cover 26. Underlord prompts are the part this table cannot price.
When is Descript not worth it?
- You edit offline. Descript does not support it, so it can be a deal breaker.
- You make cinematic or effects-heavy work. Reviewers consistently place Descript on the talking-head side.
- You lean on AI for many jobs. Credits do not roll over, and Underlord cost varies by run.
- You already pay for an AI plan and mostly cut talking heads. A one-time editor you drive with that plan may cost less over time.
- You want privacy through local files. Descript is a cloud-synced project; see local vs cloud AI video editing.
What are the alternatives?
Short list, with honest limits. DaVinci Resolve Studio is a full editor with colour and audio tools, at a steeper learning curve. CapCut is quick for short social video, though its pricing has changed more than once. Premiere is subscription software with a long track record. Descript itself still leads on transcript editing and shared team projects.
We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly. Rushilo is a one-time purchase for Mac and Windows: $19 (1 computer), $29 (3 computers), $49 (5 computers), with 1, 3 or 5 computers covered depending on the plan. It cuts by word-level transcript, removes filler words with a preview and tightens pauses with a limit you pick. It has no media-hour meter and no credits, because it ships no AI: your cost for AI is your own plan. If you do not have one, you can still cut by transcript and remove fillers and pauses by hand. If you must buy an AI plan only to edit, add that plan to the licence; check Anthropic's pricing page for current Claude prices. If you already pay for Claude or ChatGPT, the licence is the only new cost, from $19.
For a fuller comparison and a 12 and 24 month cost table, see Descript alternatives and the 12 and 24 month cost table.
Rushilo has limits: no live collaboration, no cloud storage or remote guest recording, no built-in AI, local model captions are slow, and the Windows build was unsigned at 1.0.0 (see release notes). To drive it with an AI, see can Claude edit videos or editing with Codex, and our BYOK cost guide. See pricing, or Buy Rushilo.
How we checked
All Descript facts come from its pricing page and three help pages, read on October 20, 2026, plus the Trustpilot profile and the Reddit posts dated above. We did not test Descript or Rushilo on matching footage, so there is no speed, accuracy or quality comparison here. Not confirmed: the per-seat price for extra Creator seats, the Free plan watermark, the export resolution for Business, and the Windows signing status today. Our Rushilo figures come from the site's own plan data. Full list in the sources below.
Frequently asked questions
Is Descript worth it?
Descript is worth it if you edit spoken video or audio regularly and your month fits its limits: Hobbyist is $16 a month billed annually for 10 media hours and 400 AI credits, Creator is $24 for 30 hours and 800 credits (Descript pricing, checked October 20, 2026). It is a weaker buy if you need offline editing, heavy AI use or cinematic control.
Is Descript worth it for YouTubers?
For talking-head, tutorial and commentary channels, usually yes on Hobbyist if 1080p is enough: four videos with 60 minutes of raw footage each use about 4 of its 10 media hours. Choose Creator for 4K export. Skip it for effects-heavy or gaming edits. We did not test Descript hands-on; figures come from its pricing page, checked October 20, 2026.
How much does Descript cost per month?
Per Descript's pricing page, checked October 20, 2026: Hobbyist $16 billed annually or $24 monthly, Creator $24 or $35, Business $50 or $65, per person. Free is $0 with 60 media minutes and 100 one-time AI credits. The page shows dollars without a currency code, so check your checkout total.
What are the main complaints about Descript?
Reviews and user posts we read cite AI credits running out, Underlord misreading instructions, bugs on large projects, no offline editing and hard-to-find cancellation. Trustpilot showed 2.6 of 5 across 290 reviews on October 20, 2026, with 37% five-star and 43% one-star. Those reviews are self-selected, so treat them as signals to check, not a verdict.
Does Descript work offline?
No. Descript's help center says it does not support offline editing and that you need an internet connection for changes to sync and back up (checked October 20, 2026). If you edit on planes or on unreliable connections, that alone can decide the purchase.
Is Descript worth it for podcasters?
For regular conversational shows, often yes: four 90-minute episodes use about 6 of Hobbyist's 10 media hours, and filler word removal and transcript cuts are its core. One r/podcasting user reported voices split to left and right in stereo, which forced an export and reimport. Try the Free plan on one real episode first.
Is there a free version of Descript?
Yes. Descript's Free plan is $0 and includes 60 media minutes a month and 100 AI credits that are one-time, not monthly, per its pricing page on October 20, 2026. Free exports at 720p. Confirm on the page whether your export carries a watermark before you rely on it for published work.
What is the best Descript alternative?
It depends on the job. Rushilo is a fit if you already pay for Claude Code, Codex or an API key and want a one-time price, with no credits and no cloud editing. Choose Descript instead for remote recording, live team editing or built-in AI. We make Rushilo, so compare the cost table on the alternatives page yourself.
