Can Claude edit videos? What it can and cannot do (2026)

Claude does not play, trim or render video itself. It edits by operating a tool that can. Here is which tools, what the Free plan allows, and where it stops.

A Reddit post titled “So Claude can now edit videos and I’m having a bit of a panic attack” reached 442 points and 305 comments in an archive snapshot. This page gives the plain answer, with what it costs and which editors it works with. Facts were checked on October 14, 2026.

The short answer

Short answer

Yes, but not alone. Claude does not play, trim or render video itself. It edits by operating a tool that can: an editor with an MCP connection such as DaVinci Resolve 21.1 or Rushilo, a script pipeline such as ffmpeg, or a plugin. Claude Code needs a Pro plan or higher, and the Free plan does not include it (claude.com/pricing, checked October 14, 2026).

For the step by step methods, including ffmpeg, Remotion and agent pipelines, read the deep guide, how to edit video with Claude Code. This page stays on the questions people ask first.

Can Claude edit videos by itself?

Answer

No. Claude does not play, trim or render video. It edits only by calling a tool that does the actual cutting and rendering. Three patterns work today, and they differ in who does the last step.

  • A script. Claude writes or runs a command such as an ffmpeg trim, or drives a script pipeline. The result is usually a finished file.
  • An editor over MCP. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the standard way agents call outside tools. An editor that exposes its timeline this way lets Claude cut, arrange and caption while you watch.
  • A plugin or connector. A maker such as Adobe or CapCut ships its own connection for some assistants.

“Edit” can also mean generating video from nothing. That is a different category, and it is not what these routes do: they cut, arrange and caption footage you already have. Editors in that same thread were quick to say where the work lands first:

“What goes first is the mechanical stuff, silence cuts, syncing, subtitles, rough assemblies. Nobody’s going to miss doing those.”

Can Claude edit videos for free?

Answer

Not with Claude Code. Claude’s pricing page lists Claude Code for Pro and above, and not for the Free plan. The Free plan covers chat and connectors, so it can write scripts, titles and caption text, but the cutting is done by a tool you run yourself.

Several top-ranking tutorials imply otherwise. Free tools such as ffmpeg cost nothing to run, but they are not driven by Claude without a plan that includes it. We did not confirm a current plan price, so check the pricing page. The cost table in the deep guide covers the other costs: your editor, cloud transcription and hosted services.

Can Claude edit videos in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro or CapCut?

Answer

It depends on the editor. Resolve has an official integration since version 21.1, Premiere Pro has a partial and unclear one, and CapCut has none for Claude. A few editors, including ours, are built around an MCP connection.

DaVinci Resolve

Works with Claude?
Yes, since 21.1 (September 8, 2026)
Official?
Yes
What we could and could not confirm
Blackmagic’s press release says it supports integration with AI assistants such as Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, to analyze projects, organize media, adjust settings and batch render, and to create highlight edits from long form video, remove unwanted clips and render deliverables. It also says 21.1 is available to download free of charge. We could not confirm whether the AI integration needs Resolve Studio.

Premiere Pro

Works with Claude?
Partly
Official?
Connector, scope unclear
What we could and could not confirm
Adobe’s connector works in Claude chat, Cowork and Claude Desktop, with 50+ tools across Adobe apps including Premiere, about 40 of them for guest users. We did not confirm that it edits a Premiere Pro timeline. A separate community Premiere server exists, which is not made by Adobe.

CapCut

Works with Claude?
Not directly
Official?
Codex only
What we could and could not confirm
CapCut has a plugin for Codex, and no official connector for Claude. Community servers and file imports fill the gap: see how to connect Claude to CapCut.

Rushilo

Works with Claude?
Yes, over a local MCP server
Official?
Yes, ours
What we could and could not confirm
Works with Claude Code, Codex or another MCP client, on Mac and Windows. It costs $99 once, plus your own AI plan. We make it.
Checked October 14, 2026. Official means the editor's own maker supports it.

We did not research Final Cut, Filmora or other editors, so we make no claim about them. If you already use Resolve, try its own integration first; it is the official route and keeps you in the editor you know. A well-known Resolve MCP server from the community, covered in the deep guide, was reported by its author to need Resolve Studio, which is one more reason to check before you plan around the free version.

Can I use Claude to edit YouTube videos?

Answer

Yes, for the mechanical work, through a connected editor or script. It handles silence cuts, rough cuts, retake removal and captions well. In plain chat, with no editor at all, Claude can also write titles, descriptions and scripts.

The jobs it does badly are the ones that need your eye: pacing by feel, story structure and anything where a shot has to be judged. One of the quotes in that Reddit thread shows how much of a working editor’s week is mechanical anyway:

“50% of my bread and butter are simple talking heads without any B-Roll.”
r/VideoEditing

That is the part automation reaches first. See the talking head workflow and removing silence and filler words. We are not claiming YouTube upload from Rushilo here; export the file and upload it as you normally would.

Can Claude combine clips?

Answer

Yes, but the tool does it, not Claude. ffmpeg can join video files, and an MCP editor can append a clip to the end of a timeline. Claude decides the order and calls the tool.

Check the output for mismatched frame rates, sizes and audio, since a tool joins what it is given. The general lesson is the same as above: the result is only as good as the tool the agent is driving.

Is there an AI that can edit my video, other than Claude?

Answer

Yes, in a few categories. Agents such as Codex drive the same kinds of tools, template and clip generators make short clips from long videos, and text-based editors cut video by editing a transcript.

If you want to understand the third category, see text-based video editing, and for the OpenAI side see how to edit video with Codex. We have not tested every product, so treat this as a map of categories, not a ranking.

How do you know the edit is right?

Answer

Watch it, and prefer a setup where you can. A visible timeline and one-step undo let you fix a wrong cut rather than redo the job, while a script that outputs a finished file leaves you the last 10% to fix by hand.

Before you trust any editor with your footage, run it through the MCP editor evaluation checklist. The questions that matter are whether you can change something by hand and have the agent continue from your version, and whether every change can be undone.

Does Claude see my footage?

Answer

Only what a tool hands it: usually a description of the project, a transcript, and preview frames. Whatever Claude reads is sent to Anthropic. We did not verify whether Claude accepts video files as input on its own, so check Anthropic’s documentation for that.

Another thread in r/editors put the unease plainly: “Am I the only one that doesn’t want a company like, well, any of them currently, having access to my machine?” It is a fair worry, and the answer depends on the exact tool. For Rushilo we wrote it out from the source in what an AI agent can touch in Rushilo, including the limits. For the general framework, see local vs cloud AI video editing.

Which should you pick?

Use Resolve already

Start with
Resolve 21.1's own integration, after you check whether your version includes it

Edit in CapCut

Start with
Files Claude writes for you to import, or the CapCut guide's other routes

Want a timeline you can watch and undo, with your own AI plan

Start with
An editor built for agents, such as Rushilo, or a similar MCP editor

Just want captions, scripts or titles

Start with
Claude chat, on any plan

Run batch jobs such as trimming and resizing

Start with
ffmpeg, with Claude writing the command

Whichever you choose, treat the first output as a rough cut and watch it all the way through. The tools change quickly: this page was checked on October 14, 2026, and some answers above, such as the Resolve question, are open until the makers say more.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude edit videos for free?

Not with Claude Code: Claude's pricing page lists it for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, not Free. The Free plan covers chat and connectors, so it can write scripts, titles and captions as text. Free tools such as ffmpeg do the cutting, and you run them yourself.

Can I use Claude to edit YouTube videos?

Yes, for the mechanical parts, through a connected editor or script: cutting silence, rough cuts and captions. In plain chat Claude can also write titles, descriptions and scripts without any editor.

Can Claude edit videos in DaVinci Resolve?

Blackmagic says Resolve 21.1, released September 8, 2026, supports AI assistants including Claude and Claude Code, for tasks such as organizing media, highlight edits and batch rendering. We have not confirmed whether that integration works in the free version or needs Resolve Studio.

Can Claude edit in Premiere Pro?

Partly, and it is unclear how far. Adobe offers a connector in Claude with tools across several Adobe apps including Premiere, but we have not confirmed that it edits a Premiere Pro timeline. A separate community Premiere server exists that is not made by Adobe.

Can Claude edit CapCut projects?

Not through an official connector. CapCut has a plugin for Codex, not Claude. Community servers write CapCut draft files, and Claude can make captions and other files that you import. See the CapCut guide for the routes.
