The short answer
Short answer
Stay on CapCut if you edit on your phone or rely on its templates. Use DaVinci Resolve if you want the best free desktop editor: Blackmagic says the free version handles 8-bit video up to Ultra HD at 60 fps. Consider Rushilo if you want a one-time-price desktop editor that your own Claude Code or Codex drives, and you already pay for that AI plan or are willing to. Rushilo has no mobile app, no template library and no AI of its own. Prices checked October 14, 2026.
We make Rushilo, so weigh that. This page says when the other options are better, and every CapCut claim links to our dated log of CapCut price and paywall changes, which carries the sources. Last checked October 14, 2026.
Why are people leaving CapCut?
The documented reasons are price, a mobile-first Standard plan, and no lifetime option. Everything beyond that is user reports. CapCut’s help center says its previous pricing closed to new subscribers on March 25, 2026 and that no lifetime purchase option exists (April 3). It says the Standard plan is designed primarily for mobile, and that accessing membership features on a PC requires Pro (April 8). Its own article lists Pro at $19.99 per month or $179.99 per year, and says prices vary by region and platform. CapCut: Standard vs Pro.
Some users also say extract audio, export resolution or auto captions moved behind Pro. We found no dated primary proof for those, and the widely repeated “June 2026 price hike” is contradicted by an archived CapCut article that already listed $179.99 in November 2025. The log sets out each claim and its evidence.
“I’m looking for an older version of CapCut for Mac, from before most features got locked behind the paywall.”
Should you just stay on CapCut?
Yes, if you edit on a phone, or if template-driven social clips are most of your work. CapCut’s own Codex page claims hundreds of thousands of creative assets, and Rushilo has nothing like that library. CapCut also covers mobile, which Rushilo does not. If you edit on a phone or tablet, the rest of this page is not for you.
Staying also makes sense if the cost is acceptable. CapCut says it has no plans to raise renewal prices for existing subscribers and promises notice before any change (April 8, 2026). Pro is $19.99 per month or $179.99 per year per CapCut, so check the price in the app before you decide.
Is DaVinci Resolve the better answer?
For many desktop editors, yes. It is the strongest free option, and it costs $295 once if you need the extra features. Blackmagic says the free version works with virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60 fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160. Studio, at $295, adds the DaVinci AI Neural Engine, text based editing, 10-bit video up to 120 fps and noise reduction. Blackmagic Design, checked October 14, 2026.
Resolve 21.1, released September 8, 2026, says it supports integration with AI assistants such as Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex. Blackmagic’s press release does not say which edition includes that integration. A trade headline suggests Studio only, but we saw only a search snippet, so treat the edition as unconfirmed. Resolve 21.1 release.
The honest cost is the learning curve. Resolve is a full colour, audio and effects suite, and users say so.
“People recommending DaVinci Resolve are wrong for recommending it as an alternative but if your edits are simple and you have a modern computer, then DaVinci is not that hard at all. Also if you are editing on your phone, then DaVinci shouldn’t be recommended at all.”
If you want colour grading, Fusion effects, multi-cam or serious audio work, choose Resolve over Rushilo.
What is Rushilo, and who is it for?
Rushilo is a local desktop video and image editor for Mac and Windows that your own AI drives. It costs $99 once and activates on up to 3 computers. It ships no AI. You connect Claude Code, Codex, an API key or a local model, and the agent edits a timeline you can see, using the same commands you do. It fits you if you already pay for Claude Code or Codex, want a one-time-price desktop editor, and prefer your files to stay on your computer. See whether Claude can edit videos, how to edit video with Claude Code and how to edit video with Codex.
Local files do not mean every request stays offline: your AI provider receives what it needs to answer. How that works, and how to limit it, is in local vs cloud AI video editing and AI agent permissions.
When is Rushilo a poor fit?
Rushilo is a poor fit in these cases, and you should pick something else.
- You edit on a phone or tablet. There is no mobile app. Rushilo runs on Mac and Windows only.
- You want a template library. There is no marketplace of templates, effects, stickers or trend assets. The agent kit ships a handful of code-clip templates and a brand kit.
- You want a clip generator or one-click AI. Rushilo ships no AI, and has no built-in generate-a-video, avatar or AI clip finder. It is not an Opus-style clip generator.
- You need heavy colour, VFX or audio post. Choose Resolve. Rushilo has no noise reduction, EQ or voice isolation.
- You need many transition types, or HEVC, ProRes or WebM export. Rushilo has dissolve and dip transitions, and exports MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio) or M4A audio.
- You do not have, or want, a Claude Code, Codex or API plan. Rushilo moves AI cost to your own account. It does not remove it.
- You need a signed Windows installer today. When we checked, the Windows build was not code-signed, so Windows may show a SmartScreen warning. Check the download page.
- You expect fast local captions. The built-in local model is Whisper base running on the CPU, which is slow compared with native tools. You can use your own OpenAI, Groq or Gemini key instead.
Screen recording is Mac only too. The editor works on both systems, but there is no recorder on Windows.
“I have Davinci Studio on my desktop, but they don’t have an app. I work on smaller projects/Shorts on the go a lot.”
How much does each option cost over 12 and 24 months?
Rushilo is cheapest among the paid options only when you already pay for the AI plan. If you would buy a new AI plan just for editing, CapCut Pro costs less. Assumptions: prices stay constant, one editor, taxes excluded, and CapCut’s figures are the ones in its own article. Rushilo’s AI cost uses the entry plan prices Anthropic and OpenAI list ($20 per month monthly, or $200 per year for Claude Pro billed annually). We make no claim about how many edits a plan covers, because vendors say only that usage limits apply, and a heavy user may need a higher plan. Claude pricing, Codex pricing.

Read it this way. If your AI plan is already paid for, Rushilo at $99 is below CapCut Pro yearly ($179.99) from year one, and it is the cheapest paid option here. If you would buy a new $20 per month plan only for editing, Rushilo costs $159.01 more than CapCut Pro yearly in year one and $219.02 more over 24 months. Pick by what you already pay for, not by the sticker price.

Can an AI agent edit in CapCut, Resolve or Rushilo?
Yes in all three in some form, but they differ in who the agent works through and where the files go.
- CapCut. CapCut has an official CapCut x Codex workflow. Its page says it is available outside the U.S. and that a U.S. launch is coming soon (checked October 14, 2026), so re-read it before relying on it. There is no official CapCut connection for Claude. See how to connect Claude to CapCut.
- DaVinci Resolve. Version 21.1 says it supports integration with Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, with the edition unconfirmed.
- Rushilo. Claude Code and Codex connect through MCP. You see every change on the timeline and can undo it.
None of them watches your finished video for you. Review the result before you publish it. For the broader picture, see can Claude edit videos.
What about free CapCut alternatives on mobile?
Rushilo is not one of them. Users in the r/CapCut thread we read name VN and InShot for the phone, and we have not tested either. If you edit on a phone, choose a mobile editor. If you edit on a computer and also pay for an AI plan, come back to Resolve or Rushilo. For spoken-word edits, see text-based video editing, and for a similar comparison against a subscription editor, see Descript alternatives. If you record talking-head video, the talking-head workflow shows what an agent-driven edit looks like. You can try the free browser tools without an account, connect your AI, or download Rushilo and buy it when you are ready.
How we checked
Every price, limit and date comes from the vendor’s own page or help center, or from an archived copy with a timestamp, and each row says which. CapCut’s web pricing page showed Canadian dollars on every fetch, so its dollar figures come from CapCut’s own article, and we label them that way. Derived totals are arithmetic on those figures. User quotes are from Reddit, attributed to the subreddit, and are never used as a source for a fact. For local captions, read Whisper subtitles offline.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free CapCut alternative on a computer?
DaVinci Resolve. Blackmagic says the free version works with virtually all 8-bit video formats at up to 60 fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160. Its learning curve is steeper than CapCut's.
Is there a CapCut alternative with no subscription?
CapCut says it has no lifetime purchase option. DaVinci Resolve Studio is $295 once and Rushilo is a one-time purchase. Rushilo needs an AI plan of your own if you want an agent to drive it. Prices checked October 14, 2026.
Can I edit videos with Claude Code or Codex instead of CapCut?
Yes, with an editor that exposes the tools to the agent. Rushilo connects through MCP. DaVinci Resolve 21.1 says it supports integration with Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex. CapCut has a Codex plugin that was available outside the U.S. only when we checked.
Does Rushilo have templates or a mobile app?
No to both. Rushilo runs on Mac and Windows only, and it has no template, effect or sticker marketplace.
How much does CapCut Pro cost?
CapCut's own resource article lists $19.99 per month or $179.99 per year, and says prices vary by region and platform. See the dated log for the sources and what we could not verify.
