Descript alternative: what Descript really costs, and when a one-time price is cheaper

Descript's plans, credits and top-ups from its own pages, run against a one-time editor you drive with your own AI. The result is not that Rushilo always wins.

The short answer

Short answer

Descript Creator is $24 per month billed annually or $35 monthly, with 30 media hours and 800 AI credits a month (Descript's pricing page, checked October 14, 2026). Rushilo is $99 once plus whatever Claude Code or Codex plan you already pay for, so it is cheaper after about 4 months against Creator annual if that AI plan is already paid. If you would have to buy a new AI plan only for editing, Descript Hobbyist on annual billing at $16 per month is cheaper over 24 months.

We make Rushilo, so check our math. The prices below come from Descript’s own pages, every assumption is stated, and the result is not that Rushilo always wins. Last checked October 14, 2026. For a similar comparison against a subscription editor, see CapCut alternatives.

How much does Descript cost in 2026?

Paid plans run from $16 to $65 per person per month, depending on plan and billing, and each plan caps media hours and AI credits. Descript says annual billing saves up to 35% against monthly. The page shows dollar figures without naming the currency, and the archived copies match. If you are outside the US, check the price in your own session. Descript pricing, checked October 14, 2026.

Descript has changed prices before. Archived copies of its pricing page show Hobbyist at $12 per month billed annually or $19 monthly on January 9, 2025, and at $16 or $24 on July 9, 2025, where it has stayed. Around the same time it moved from counted “uses” of AI actions to media hours and AI credits: the September 4, 2025 snapshot still lists uses, and the October 9, 2025 snapshot lists credits. We read no announcement of the change, so we do not give a date for it.

How do Descript AI credits work?

Media hours and AI credits are two separate allowances, neither rolls over, and Descript says the credit cost of an Underlord request is not fixed. Unused media minutes and credits reset at renewal. Chatting with Underlord, Descript’s AI co-editor, uses credits on each message. Descript calls the cost “non-deterministic”: the same prompt can cost different amounts on different runs, and you are charged for the agent and the tool it uses. In its words, “There’s no fixed price per action, but your Usage tab shows exactly what each run cost.” Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words have a maximum cost of 30 credits per file or tool application. Descript help, media minutes and AI credits.

Top-ups are available only on Creator and Business. They expire 12 months after purchase and are used after your monthly allowance. Descript help, top-ups.

How many credits does a real edit use? Descript publishes no figure, so the only numbers are user reports. One r/descript user says:

“Editing a 15-minute video (mostly removing pauses and inserting a few screenshots) costs me around 100 AI credits per prompt.”
A user on r/descript, July 1, 2026

That is a report, not a Descript or Rushilo measurement. If it holds, 100 credits is $8 at the $0.08 top-up rate and $5 at $0.05, and a Creator plan’s 800 monthly credits would cover about eight prompts of that size. We show it as arithmetic on one person’s figure, not as typical cost.

Derived totals: the stated prices multiplied out. Checked October 14, 2026.

If your AI plan is already paid for, Rushilo’s $99 is recovered in 6.2 months against Hobbyist annual, 4.1 against Creator annual, 2.8 against Creator monthly and 2.0 against Business annual.

If you must buy a new $20 per month AI plan only for editing, Descript Hobbyist on annual billing is cheaper over 24 months ($384 against $579) and over 12 ($192 against $339). Hobbyist is $16 a month, below the AI plan alone. It does cap export at 1080p, 10 media hours and 400 credits a month. Against Creator annual the two are level at 24 months ($576 against $579, a $3 gap), and Rushilo with an annual Claude plan comes in lower ($499). Against Creator monthly, Rushilo with a new plan is cheaper after 6.6 months, and against Business annual after 3.3.

The fair summary: Rushilo is cheaper when you already pay for the AI plan, or when you would otherwise be on Creator or Business. It is not cheaper than Hobbyist annual if you would need a fresh AI plan. Rushilo’s AI cost also is not credits, it is your plan’s usage limits, which the vendor sets, and a heavy day can hit one. See local vs cloud AI video editing for what that means in practice.

What does Descript do better than Rushilo?

Descript is the better tool for remote recording, team work, built-in AI and mature text-based editing. These come from its pricing and help pages. Where plan-level inclusion is unclear, we say it is listed on the page.

  • Remote recording. Rooms records with up to 10 participants, with included hours per month by plan (2 on Free, 5, 15 and 25 on the paid plans, per the pricing table). Rushilo has no remote recording, and no recorder on Windows.
  • Transcription depth. Multitrack transcription with speaker detection and many languages. Rushilo has a word-timed transcript and makes no speaker detection claim.
  • Team features. Live collaboration, comments, seats, a shared drive and a brand studio on Business, plus SSO and SOC 2 Type II on Enterprise, per its page. Rushilo is single-user and local.
  • Built-in AI. Studio Sound, Eye Contact, Green Screen, Automatic Multicam, Remove Retakes, Edit for Clarity, AI speech and voice clones, avatars, translation and dubbing in 30 or more languages, and video and image generation. Rushilo ships no AI and has no denoise, eye contact, avatars or dubbing.
  • Timeline export. Descript lists export to Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, Logic, Audition, Reaper and Samplitude on its pricing page. Rushilo has no editor-interchange export.
  • Cloud projects. Cloud storage and shared projects. Rushilo works on local files. It imports mp4, mov, m4v, webm and mkv video, common audio formats and images. Whether every codec inside those containers decodes, such as HEVC or ProRes, is unconfirmed.
  • Text-based editing. Descript has been the reference product for editing video by editing text, and has captions in the same product.
  • An agent interface. It also has an API and MCP, so another AI assistant can drive it (below).

When is Rushilo the better choice?

When cost, local files and your own agent matter more than the extras above. It is $99 once, with no media-hour or credit meter. Rushilo is a desktop editor for Mac and Windows that your own Claude Code, Codex, API key or local model drives. Your files stay on your computer, the agent works on a visible timeline you also edit, with one shared undo, and editing does not require an account sync. A transcript panel supports word-level cuts, filler removal and pause tightening; see text-based video editing and removing silence and filler words for how it works and where it falls short. Local files do not make every request offline, since your AI provider receives what it needs; AI agent permissions covers how to limit that. It suits spoken-word work such as talking-head videos and video podcasts, with the limits below. See can Claude edit videos for what an agent can and cannot do.

When is Rushilo a poor fit?

Rushilo is a poor fit in these cases, and Descript or another tool serves you better.

  • You record remote guests or run multitrack podcast sessions. Rushilo has no remote recording.
  • You want built-in AI. Rushilo ships none, and has no denoise, eye contact, avatar or dubbing features.
  • You work in a team with live collaboration or shared projects. Rushilo is single-user and local.
  • You need to hand timelines to Premiere, Final Cut or a DAW. There is no interchange export.
  • You expect fast local captions. The built-in local model is Whisper base on the CPU and is slow compared with native tools. Your own OpenAI, Groq or Gemini key is the faster route.
  • You do not have, or want, a Claude Code, Codex or API plan. Rushilo moves AI cost to your account.
  • You need a signed Windows installer today. The Windows build was not code-signed when we checked, so Windows may show a SmartScreen warning. Check the download page.
  • You edit on a phone. There is no mobile app.

Does Descript work offline?

No, according to Descript’s help center. It says: “Descript doesn’t support offline editing. You’ll need an internet connection for your changes to sync and your project to back up.” Descript help, saving. It did announce offline support once: an archived Descript blog post, first captured on September 13, 2020, announces it. So offline support existed and is not supported now. Archived announcement.

Can Claude or Codex drive Descript too?

Yes. Descript has an API and MCP so you can edit “through code, or from inside your AI assistant”, and it uses the same media minutes and AI credits as the app. Imports and Underlord edits started from the API or MCP draw on the same allowance. Neither product is the only one with an agent. The difference is who pays for the AI work: Descript meters it in credits, while with Rushilo it runs against your own Claude or Codex plan. Its Underlord model picker also lists Claude and other models, with premium models on paid plans. Descript API and MCP.

What do Descript users say about credits?

These are users, not sources for a fact, but they show where the friction is.

“I don’t want to burn credits because the AI misunderstood an edit, exported something wrong, or had to redo the same task several times. Paying more because the software made a mistake just doesn’t make sense to me.”
A user on r/descript, September 2, 2026
“Descript is getting worse and worse with each passing month - moving further and further away from its initial “text based video editing” pitch and tacking on more and more “machine learning” features that I do not want or need. All the while the app is becoming more bloated and painful to use, and key features like offline editing have been stripped away.”
A user on r/editors, February 12, 2026
“I am running out of AI credits quite quickly, even though most of my AI usage has resulted in Underlord misinterpreting instructions, making mistakes, and spending upwards of 10 minutes processing one request.”
A user on r/descript, April 3, 2026

The complaint is about a credit-metered AI cost model. Rushilo does not remove AI cost, it moves it to your own plan, and a vendor’s usage limits can bite there too.

Other Descript alternatives worth a look

DaVinci Resolve is the main one we can verify. It is free, and Resolve Studio is $295 once and lists text based editing, per Blackmagic (checked October 14, 2026). If you are comfortable learning a full editor, that is the cheapest path to transcript-based cuts. Blackmagic Design. Users also name other tools, but we have not verified them, so we leave them out. If you are leaving CapCut instead, read CapCut alternatives. For captions without uploading, see Whisper subtitles offline and the free browser tools.

To try Rushilo, connect your AI and download it, then buy it if it fits. You can also see editing with Codex and editing with Claude Code.

How we checked

Descript figures are from its pricing page, its help center and archived copies of the pricing page. Plan-level ticks on that page did not survive our capture, so features are described as listed on the page rather than assigned to a plan, apart from numbers. Totals are arithmetic on the stated prices. Credits per task are a user report, and how long Descript’s prices will hold is an assumption.
