What is the short answer?
Short answer
Pick by output first. For free plain captions, Clipchamp says autocaptions are free for all users, and YouTube adds automatic captions to uploads. For styled animated word captions, ZapCap, Submagic, Captions, Kapwing, VEED and Descript are cloud tools with limits on their free tiers. For local, one-time pricing, MacWhisper and Rushilo run speech recognition on your computer. CapCut's own pages disagree on whether auto captions are free, so check before you pay. Reviewed October 20, 2026.
Two terms, defined once. Styled word captions are animated words, such as a highlight that moves as each word is spoken. Burned in means the words are drawn into the video pixels, so they show on every platform. A plain SRT is a text file with times that a player draws in its own style.
Every row below was read on the vendor's own page on October 20, 2026. Prices and limits change, so check again at checkout. This page is about captions only. To replace the whole editor, see the CapCut alternatives page.
Are CapCut auto captions free or Pro only?
Short answer
CapCut's own pages disagree. We found no dated source for when, or whether, this changed, so test it in the app before you pay for anything.

How do I pick an alternative by what I need?
Short answer
Start with the output you need, then where the work runs, then what you will pay. The other order sends you to a tool that cannot make the file you want.
Plain words, free
- Choose the kind
- Clipchamp autocaptions, or YouTube automatic captions if the video ends up on YouTube

Which free options really have no watermark?
Short answer
On the pages we read, Clipchamp and YouTube. Kapwing's free exports carry a watermark, and Descript's free plan does not include watermark-free export.
Clipchamp says autocaptions are free for all users with “no limits on generating subtitles for a video”, and its pricing page says the free plan exports without a watermark up to 1080p. The trade is that it detects one language at a time and downloads transcripts as .srt only. YouTube's automatic captions are free too, but they exist only on YouTube.
The cloud caption tools make the length the catch. ZapCap's free plan is 3 videos a month at 1 minute 30 seconds each. Kapwing's free plan exports up to 4 minutes. Submagic and Captions do not state their free rules on the pages we read, so we say nothing about their free watermarks. If you make one short clip a week, a free tier may be enough. If you make ten minute videos, it will not be.
Do I need styled word captions or is an SRT enough?
Short answer
Styled words suit short vertical clips where captions are part of the look. A plain SRT or VTT suits long videos where viewers can turn captions on and off.
A plain file cannot carry animation. It holds words and times, and whatever shows them decides the font, size and position. That is why one SRT looks different on YouTube, in a video player and in a social app. Burned-in captions look the same everywhere, but you cannot turn them off, and a typo means exporting the video again. Many creators keep both: a styled burned-in version for short clips, and a plain sidecar file for the long cut.
If you liked CapCut's pop-on word styles, a plain-file tool will not give them to you. Clipchamp, YouTube, MacWhisper and whisper.cpp are in the plain-text camp on the pages we read. For the delivery question, see burned-in vs closed captions, and for the file choice, SRT vs VTT.
How accurate are free auto captions, and what about languages?
Short answer
Treat every automatic caption as a draft. We ran no accuracy test, so we make no accuracy claim for any tool on this page.
YouTube's help says automatic captions “might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise”. That is the right review rule for every tool. Read the captions once at normal speed and check, in this order: names, numbers, then negations such as “can't” against “can”. Then check timing. If lines drift, see fixing out of sync subtitles.
Language counts are vendor claims, and some pages disagree with themselves. Clipchamp's landing page says 80 or more languages and its subtitle page says over 100, so we state neither as fact. Test your language on a 30 second clip before you commit.
Where does your audio go?
Short answer
CapCut says caption generation often uses cloud processing. Clipchamp says audio is not stored. MacWhisper, whisper.cpp and Rushilo run recognition on your computer.
CapCut's help page says caption generation often uses cloud processing. Clipchamp's FAQ says audio is not stored by Clipchamp. For Kapwing, VEED, ZapCap, Submagic, Captions and Descript we did not find a statement about where audio goes on the pages we read, so read their privacy terms if it matters. Local tools have costs of their own: setup effort, and usually slower runs.
Where does Rushilo fit, and where does it not?
We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly.
Short answer
Rushilo suits people who want styled word captions made on their own computer for a one-time price. It is not a phone app, it has no template library, and its on-device captions are not fast.
Rushilo recognises speech with the Whisper base model on your computer, or with your own OpenAI, Groq or Gemini key. You can caption a whole video or one clip. It has eight caption styles: plain, highlight, pop, karaoke, box, slam, outline and minimal. You can click a word to change its colour, size or weight. It exports SRT or VTT, and it can burn captions into the video. Plans start from $19 one time, and a licence covers 1, 3 or 5 computers depending on the plan.
If that fits, Buy Rushilo or download it and try one clip.
Captions not working? Check these first
Short answer
If you are still using CapCut and captions fail, its own help page lists five causes. Failure and a paywall can look alike, so check these before assuming either. The full fix list is in CapCut auto captions not working.
- Poor audio quality or background noise.
- An unsupported language, or the wrong language setting.
- A weak or unstable internet connection, because caption generation often uses cloud processing.
- A muted or missing audio track.
- Software glitches or an outdated version.
Source: CapCut help, auto captions, read October 20, 2026. That page never mentions Pro or a subscription, so we cannot say a paywall causes any error.
What is a 10 minute checklist for captioning your next video?
Short answer
Choose the output, run the tool, correct the words, check the timing, then export. Correcting is the step people skip.
- Choose the output. Burned-in styled words, or a sidecar file.
- Check the free limit against your video length before you upload.
- Generate captions and set the language by hand if the tool lets you.
- Correct names, numbers and negations.
- Check timing at the start, middle and end.
- Export and watch the file once with sound off.
What could we not verify?
Short answer
Several things. We list them so you can check them yourself.
- Why CapCut's two pages disagree, and whether the free tool still works for you.
- Free plan limits and watermarks for Submagic, Captions and VEED.
- MacWhisper's one-time pricing and whether it burns styled captions into video.
- Clipchamp's language count and Mac availability beyond the browser.
- Whether unlicensed Rushilo copies show a watermark.
- Non-English caption quality in Rushilo, and any tool's accuracy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best CapCut captions alternative?
It depends on your output. For free plain captions, Clipchamp says autocaptions are free for all users. For styled animated word captions in the cloud, ZapCap, Submagic and Captions are built for that. We make Rushilo, which makes local Whisper captions in eight styles on a Mac or Windows PC with a one-time licence, but it is not fast. Check each free tier's limits first.
Are CapCut auto captions free?
CapCut gives conflicting answers. Its resource article, dated September 23, 2026, says the auto caption generator is exclusive to Pro, while its caption tool page says captions are converted free of charge. We found no dated primary source for when that changed, so check inside the app before you pay. Our dated pricing log holds the sources.
How can I get auto captions without CapCut Pro?
Use another tool. Clipchamp says autocaptions are free with no limit on generating subtitles, YouTube adds automatic captions to uploads for free, and paid tools such as ZapCap start at $8 per month. Free tiers usually cap length or add a watermark, so read the plan limits first, and review every caption for accents and names.
Which free caption tool is closest to CapCut?
Clipchamp is the closest free match we found: it says its free plan exports without a watermark up to 1080p and that autocaptions are free for all users. Kapwing and Descript add a watermark on free exports. Our free auto caption generator comparison sorts ten tools by what each free plan limits. Checked October 20, 2026.
Do I need styled word captions or is an SRT enough?
An SRT or VTT file holds plain timed text that a player or platform shows in its own style. Animated word captions, like the pop and highlight looks CapCut made popular, are rendered into the video pixels. Pick burned-in styled words for short-form social clips, and a sidecar file when viewers can switch captions on and off.
Are free auto captions accurate?
Treat them as a draft. YouTube's own help warns that automatic captions can misrepresent speech because of mispronunciations, accents, dialects or background noise, and tells creators to review them. Check names, numbers and negations first, then timing. We ran no accuracy test, so we make no accuracy claim for any tool here.
Can I make captions on my own computer without uploading my video?
Yes. MacWhisper runs Whisper models locally on a Mac, whisper.cpp does it from the command line, and Rushilo recognises speech on your computer with the Whisper base model. Local tools avoid uploading audio but can be slower and need setup. We have not tested non-English accuracy in Rushilo, so try your language on a short clip.
Why are my CapCut auto captions not working?
CapCut's help page lists poor audio or background noise, the wrong language setting, a weak internet connection because captioning uses cloud processing, a muted or missing audio track, and an outdated app. Check those first. We found no CapCut page saying a paywall causes the error, so a missing button may be a plan limit or a bug.
How do I make captions show one word at a time?
Pick a word-by-word caption style. Rushilo's box style shows one word at a time in a bold box, and its pop, karaoke and highlight styles animate words as they are spoken. You choose the style after the captions are generated, and your agent can regroup how many words sit on a line.
