Which should you buy?
Short answer
For screenshots plus short screen demos, try CleanShot's Studio Mode before buying another recorder: it includes smart zooms, cursor smoothing and backgrounds. Screen Studio is worth considering when its local caption workflow or recording-specific controls solve a remaining problem. CleanShot Basic is $35 once with one year of updates; Screen Studio lists $29 monthly or $9 per month billed yearly. Both focus on Mac workflows.
If you already own CleanShot, the question is whether your next video needs something it cannot comfortably deliver. Start with one actual recording, rather than a feature count. If you already finish good videos in Screen Studio, a lower purchase price elsewhere is useful only if switching leaves that workflow intact.
CleanShot's Studio Mode changes the old comparison
The old split was simple: CleanShot for screenshots, Screen Studio for polished video. CleanShot 5.0 added Studio Mode on September 1, 2026. Its recording page now documents smart zooms, cursor smoothing, background controls and trimming. It also supports camera, microphone and system audio capture. Buying Screen Studio just to add a zoom to a short recording deserves a second look.
There is still a reason to choose either app. CleanShot's screenshot tools cover scrolling capture, annotation and text recognition. Screen Studio's auto zoom guide explains how to target clicks and switch to a manual target when there was no click. Those controls matter when a demo needs to show the result of an action somewhere else on screen.

| Your next deliverable | Where to start | What decides it |
|---|---|---|
| An annotated screenshot and a short bug clip | CleanShot | Can you capture and explain the problem without a second app? |
| A screen demo with zooms and a background | Your current app | Both document this workflow. Compare the edits you need after capture. |
| A narrated tutorial needing corrected captions | Screen Studio's caption workflow | Confirm the voice source and whether the captions survive your final export. |
| An MP4 recorded by someone else | Test the imported file | An import does not recreate separately captured cursor and camera data. |
Check captions and existing recordings before you switch
Screen Studio documents local captions from the recorded voiceover, with transcript correction and export. The guide says the caption option is unavailable if microphone audio was not recorded. If you intend to caption a meeting's system audio or someone else's file, check that exact input path. A demo with your own microphone is a different requirement.
CleanShot advertises automatic transcripts with CleanShot Cloud. A transcript on a hosted video page and subtitles visible inside an exported MP4 serve different delivery needs. Its linked recording page does not establish an equivalent local caption-burning workflow. If that is essential, verify it before purchasing; this is a documentation gap, not proof that a feature cannot exist.
Screen Studio also imports an existing MP4 into a project. Its guide explicitly excludes captured cursor animations and the separate selfie camera for imported content. Importing a flattened recording cannot recover those separate sources. If the cursor already obscures a label, a later visual effect may not give you the correction you expected.
What do they cost over one year and three years?
Screen Studio lists $29 monthly or $9 per month billed yearly. Its FAQ says old one-time licences remain valid but are no longer sold. CleanShot Basic is $35 USD with a year of updates, while Pro is $10 per user per month billed yearly. Basic updates can be renewed for $19 per year. You can keep the last eligible version without renewing.
Screen Studio, annual billing
- First year
- $9 × 12 = $108
- Three years
- $108 × 3 = $324
Screen Studio, monthly billing
- First year
- $29 × 12 = $348
- Three years
- $348 × 3 = $1,044
CleanShot Basic, no update renewals
- First year
- $35
- Three years
- $35; keep last eligible version
CleanShot Basic, renew after years 1 and 2
- First year
- $35
- Three years
- $35 + $19 + $19 = $73
CleanShot Pro, annual billing
- First year
- $10 × 12 = $120
- Three years
- $120 × 3 = $360
| Purchase choice | First year | Three years |
|---|---|---|
| Screen Studio, annual billing | $9 × 12 = $108 | $108 × 3 = $324 |
| Screen Studio, monthly billing | $29 × 12 = $348 | $348 × 3 = $1,044 |
| CleanShot Basic, no update renewals | $35 | $35; keep last eligible version |
| CleanShot Basic, renew after years 1 and 2 | $35 | $35 + $19 + $19 = $73 |
| CleanShot Pro, annual billing | $10 × 12 = $120 | $120 × 3 = $360 |
The $35 and $73 rows buy app use with different update choices. They do not buy Pro's cloud allowance or team features. An owner of an older Screen Studio licence should check renewal eligibility in their account instead of treating the new-customer subscription as their only option. See the broader one-time purchase Mac app comparison for other licence models.
Compare the deliverable you actually need
Here is a suggested test for a software tutorial. Record a billing setting changing from monthly to annual, then wait for a confirmation message in another corner of the window. Say the billing condition aloud while the app saves. Use the same account state and script in each recorder. This is a test recipe, not a result from running either product.
Before and after
- A useful result
- A viewer can read both the original setting and the new state.
Confirmation
- A useful result
- The zoom lets viewers see the saved-state message, not just the clicked toggle.
Speech during waiting
- A useful result
- Shortening the wait preserves the spoken billing condition.
Captions in delivery
- A useful result
- The intended subtitle text is present in the file or hosted page you will send.
One requested revision
- A useful result
- You can reopen the project and fix the wrong emphasis without recording again.
| Check | A useful result |
|---|---|
| Before and after | A viewer can read both the original setting and the new state. |
| Confirmation | The zoom lets viewers see the saved-state message, not just the clicked toggle. |
| Speech during waiting | Shortening the wait preserves the spoken billing condition. |
| Captions in delivery | The intended subtitle text is present in the file or hosted page you will send. |
| One requested revision | You can reopen the project and fix the wrong emphasis without recording again. |
Watch the delivered version at the size your audience will see. If both apps pass, the cheaper or already-owned option is a reasonable choice. If one fails, identify the exact missing control. That gives you a purchase reason you can verify. Our product demo guide covers preparing the account and script before recording.
When the missing piece is an editor
If the problem is repeated takes, speech cleanup or combining recordings with other footage, include editing in the decision. We make Rushilo: it has a visible timeline, local Whisper captions and agent-directed transcript cuts. Recording is Mac only; editing also works on Windows. The licence starts at $19, paid once, with your AI account or API usage paid separately. Check the agent setup and the current licence before buying.
A dedicated recorder may already do everything you need. For a wider shortlist, read Screen Studio alternatives. For the dialogue problem specifically, work through the bad-take editing example.
This comparison uses current vendor pages and guides checked October 18, 2026. We have not measured capture quality, stability or export speed in either app.
Frequently asked questions
Does CleanShot have automatic zoom now?
Yes. CleanShot's current site advertises automatically generated smart zooms, and Studio Mode includes zoom editing, cursor smoothing and backgrounds. Its changelog dates the 5.0 Studio Mode release to September 1, 2026.
Can I buy Screen Studio with a one-time payment?
Its current FAQ says one-time licences remain valid for existing owners but are no longer sold to new buyers. New plans are $29 monthly or $9 per month billed yearly, checked October 18, 2026.
Will imported MP4s get Screen Studio's cursor effects?
Not the effects that require recording metadata. Screen Studio supports creating a project from an MP4, but its guide says captured cursor animations and the separate selfie camera are unavailable for imported content.
What is the best Mac screen recorder for demos, Screen Studio or CleanShot?
For screenshots plus short screen demos, try CleanShot's Studio Mode first, since it includes smart zooms, cursor smoothing and backgrounds. Screen Studio is worth considering when its local caption workflow or recording-specific controls solve a remaining problem. If repeated takes or speech cleanup are the issue, an editor such as Rushilo, which we make, may fit better.
