Gling vs TimeBolt vs Descript for talking head YouTube videos

A dated side by side read from each vendor's own pages: what you pay, what leaves your computer, what each cuts, and where the cheapest plan cannot export. We did not test the tools.

Which should you pick: Gling, TimeBolt or Descript?

Short answer

Pick Gling for a fast pre-edit that hands off to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro. Pick TimeBolt for local waveform cuts, XML to those editors and a $347 one-time option. Pick Descript to finish the whole video by editing text. Every price was read from the vendor's own page on October 20, 2026, and we did not test any of the three. Rushilo is a fourth option if you want to finish in one editor.

How we checked: we read each vendor's pricing, features, help and privacy pages on October 20, 2026. We did not install or run Gling, TimeBolt or Descript, so nothing here is a statement about how well any of them cuts. It is a dated read of what each vendor says it does, what it charges and where the limits are. Prices change often, so the date sits next to every figure.

  • You finish in Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve or Final Cut Pro: Gling or TimeBolt. Both are built to pre-edit and hand off a timeline.
  • You want waveform-based silence cuts, local processing and a pay-once option: TimeBolt.
  • You want to edit the whole video by editing its transcript, with no other editor: Descript.
  • You are on the free plan and want to hand off to another editor: check first. None of the three free plans exports to Premiere, Resolve or Final Cut, per their own pages.
  • You want one editor, one-time price and your own AI doing the cutting: Rushilo is another option, with the limits described below.

How much do Gling, TimeBolt and Descript cost?

Mid

Gling
Pro: $40 monthly or $20 annual, 30 hours per month, premium support

Descript

Extra meters

Gling
Hours are AI-edited media, generated video words or a mix; unused hours do not roll over
TimeBolt
UMCHECK (filler words and retakes): $0.03 per minute of video, pay per use, not in plans
Descript
AI credits do not roll over; media hours count uploads whether or not transcribed
Prices read on each vendor's own page on October 20, 2026. US dollars as shown, before tax.

Our arithmetic, assuming annual billing and nothing else: 12 months costs $120 for Gling Plus, $97 for TimeBolt Pro, $192 for Descript Hobbyist and $288 for Descript Creator. Over 24 months those become $240, $194, $384 and $576. TimeBolt Lifetime at $347 passes Descript Creator on annual billing after about 14.5 months, and TimeBolt Pro on annual billing after about 43. Four 15-minute videos a month through UMCHECK is 60 minutes, or $1.80. For how Descript credits behave in practice, see the Descript alternative page.

The headline price is not the whole bill, because each tool meters something different. Gling and Descript limit what you can process: Gling by hours of AI-edited media each month, Descript by media hours plus AI credits, and in both cases unused allowance does not roll over. TimeBolt meters nothing on the plan itself but charges per minute for filler and retake detection. If you record long, retake often or process many videos, the meter that bites first is different for each tool, so estimate your own monthly minutes before comparing the plan prices.

What each vendor says its tool removes. Read on vendor pages on October 20, 2026. We did not test accuracy.

Two details are easy to miss. Gling lists a limited set of codecs for now (AAC, H.264, MP3, Opus, PCM variants, Vorbis, VP8, VP9 and AV1), and HEVC and ProRes are not in that list. Gling also says multicam and separate microphone tracks only work when you export to Resolve or Final Cut. For the craft itself, how to set pauses and pick a take, see removing silence and filler words and removing bad takes.

Do Gling, TimeBolt and Descript run locally?

TimeBolt says on its pricing FAQ that it processes everything locally and your video files never leave your device. Its features page describes UMCHECK as combining local waveform analysis with AWS-based transcription (Amazon Transcribe). The pages imply that audio is sent for that step but do not say so outright, so ask the vendor before you rely on a hard “nothing leaves the machine” claim. Banger video sharing requires cloud services.

Gling is available on the web and as a desktop app for Mac and Windows. Its privacy policy, last updated October 17, 2026, says desktop projects are stored on your computer and web or synced projects are stored on its servers. The same policy lists transcription, audio enhancement and AI providers that process your media.

Descript is a cloud project: you upload media, it counts against media hours, and cloud storage is limited by plan. We could not confirm which storage size belongs to which plan from the page, so we leave the figures out. Its MCP route has no rendered file download without publishing. For the wider trade-offs, see local vs cloud AI video editing.

Which tools export to Premiere, Resolve and Final Cut?

Descript
In .prproj, layer position, scale, crop and transforms do not export; frame-rate mismatch can cause "Invalid edit with no respective media"
Handoff to other editors, per each vendor's pages on October 20, 2026.

The pattern: the cheapest tier of each tool cannot hand off to another editor. If your plan is a rough cut in one of these and a finish in Premiere, Resolve or Final Cut, price the paid tier, not the free one. XML handoff has rough edges for any tool; the examples below are single reports, not rates.

Can Claude or ChatGPT drive Gling, TimeBolt or Descript?

Descript has an MCP connector that links Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or a custom connector to your Descript login. It can import media, run Underlord edits, publish to a web link and export transcripts, with the limits on its help page. TimeBolt has a Local MCP connector for ChatGPT Desktop and Claude Desktop: run UMCHECK first, ask the assistant to edit, review in the timeline, then render locally or export to Final Cut, Premiere or Resolve. TimeBolt calls the AI connection optional. For Gling we did not find an assistant connector on the pricing, desktop, help or save-time pages. For how these connectors are judged, see video editing MCP servers.

What do users say about these tools?

We found little recent three-way discussion, so these are single comments, not a sentiment measure. The dates matter because all three products change quickly.

“You can then export the rough cut XML to your video editor of choice (Davinci Resolve in my case). It is INCREDIBLY time efficient.”
r/VideoEditing, March 3, 2025, about Gling
“I can use the Underlord AI features to identify and remove bad takes (non destructively) but I can drag the clip handle timeline if I want more control too. Then I export back as .xml file for Premiere”
r/NewTubers, April 26, 2025, about Descript
“I tried to connect with Claude and ended up redoing all the work. I tried different prompts and my credits were gone half way through the first video.”
r/NewTubers, September 14, 2026, about Descript credits (original spelling)
“I was on the free plan - exporting was a pain, it just wasn't moving.”
r/NewTubers, January 22, 2025, about Gling on the free plan

What do the vendor tests say, and why do we not rank on them?

The only quantitative three-way tests we found were published by TimeBolt. We cite them for what they are and draw no ranking from them.

Where does Rushilo fit?

We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly. Start with the limits. Rushilo does not export a timeline to Premiere, Resolve or Final Cut: we checked this on the 1.3.1 release, and you finish the video inside Rushilo. If your workflow is a pre-edit and then Premiere, Gling or TimeBolt suit it better.

Retakes are not found by a one-click detector. Your connected agent (Claude Code, Codex or another MCP client) reads the transcript and judges which take to keep, then cuts those word runs, each as one undo step. Silence is found by gaps between words, not by loudness, so it will not find silence in footage with no speech, and there is no waveform threshold tool. The filler button covers um, uh, er and hmm, plus “like” and “you know” only when set off by a comma or pause. We claim no catch rate.

What it offers instead: a word-level transcript made on your computer, a timeline you can watch while the agent edits, one undo history shared by you and the agent, and a one-time price of $19 (1 computer), $29 (3 computers), $49 (5 computers). Rushilo ships no AI, so your own AI plan or key is a separate cost, and Descript and TimeBolt now offer agent connectors too. For the money case against Descript, see the Descript alternative page, and for the workflow, talking head videos. A licence covers 1, 3 or 5 computers. If that fits, Buy Rushilo.

What are the limits of this comparison?

  • We read, we did not test. Nothing here measures speed, accuracy or reliability.
  • Prices and plan contents were read on October 20, 2026 and change often. Descript, Gling and TimeBolt pages show dollars without naming a currency.
  • We could not confirm which Gling plans include XML export, only that the free plan does not. Check the pricing page.
  • We did not confirm Descript platform support or its storage size by plan.
  • Whether UMCHECK sends audio off your computer is implied by TimeBolt's pages, not stated.
  • User quotes are single anecdotes, and some are old.

Frequently asked questions

Which is best, Gling, TimeBolt or Descript?

It depends on your workflow, per each vendor's own pages checked October 20, 2026. Gling suits a fast rough cut that exports XML to Premiere, Resolve or Final Cut. TimeBolt suits local waveform cuts and has a $347 one-time option. Descript suits finishing a whole video by editing text. We did not test any of them.

How much do Gling, TimeBolt and Descript cost?

Checked October 20, 2026: Gling Plus is $20 monthly or $10 a month billed annually. TimeBolt Pro is $17 monthly, $97 a year or $347 once. Descript Creator is $35 monthly or $24 a month billed annually. Gling and Descript also meter usage by hours or credits, and TimeBolt charges $0.03 per minute for filler detection.

Which one removes filler words and bad takes?

All three list both. Gling lists bad takes, silences and filler words on its plans. TimeBolt cuts silence on the free plan and charges $0.03 per minute of video for its UMCHECK filler and retake detection. Descript lists Remove Filler Words and Remove Retakes as AI tools metered by credits. We did not test accuracy.

Which tools export to Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro?

All three can, with limits. Gling's free plan cannot. TimeBolt's free plan has no XML export, and its paid plans list XML, FCPXML and a Premiere extension. Descript's timeline export is on Creator, Business and Enterprise only. Rushilo does not export timelines to other editors, so it suits finishing in one place.

Do Gling, TimeBolt and Descript run locally?

TimeBolt says it processes video locally, but its filler feature uses AWS transcription. Gling stores desktop projects on your computer, while its policy says providers process media for transcription. Descript is a cloud project with storage limits by plan. Read each policy before uploading client footage.

Can Claude or ChatGPT edit with them?

Descript has an MCP connector for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. TimeBolt has a local MCP connector for ChatGPT Desktop and Claude Desktop, with cuts reviewable in its timeline. We found no assistant connector on Gling's pages. Rushilo connects Claude Code, Codex and other MCP clients to its own timeline.

Is there a one-time purchase option?

TimeBolt Lifetime is $347 once, with future updates, per its pricing page checked October 20, 2026. Gling and Descript show subscriptions only. Rushilo is $19, $29 or $49 once, depending on computers, plus your own AI plan, but it has no Premiere or Resolve export.

What is the best tool to cut talking head YouTube videos?

If you hand off to Premiere or Resolve, Gling or TimeBolt fit better. If you edit by text, Descript fits. Rushilo suits people who want to finish in one editor, driven by their own AI, with a one-time price. It is a judgement call by workflow, and we tested none of them. Check each plan's export and usage limits first.
