What is a video editing MCP server?

Short answer

Video editing MCP servers fall into four kinds: desktop editors with a timeline you can open and undo, cloud services where the vendor holds the project, wrappers around existing apps such as DaVinci Resolve, Premiere, CapCut and FFmpeg, and code-video tools such as Remotion. DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 added a native server in September 2026; Premiere has no official one that we could find. We listed documented capabilities on October 20, 2026, and tested none of them.

An MCP server is the piece that lets Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another AI client call a video tool directly. The protocol only describes how tools are listed and called, so two “video editing MCP servers” can be wildly different: one edits a project you can open on your own computer, another renders clips in a vendor's cloud. That difference matters more than the tool count.

How this list was checked

Every row was read from its primary page or repository on October 20, 2026. Stars and commit dates come from GitHub. “Clients documented” means the client is named on the product's own page or README, not that we tested it. We installed none of these servers, so nothing here is a ranking. Rows we could not confirm from a primary source were left out rather than filled from directory listings.

We make Rushilo, which is one row in the desktop group, written in the same format as the rest. To check any server yourself before relying on it, test a server on your own footage with a short clip, one revision, an undo and an export.

Desktop editors with a timeline

In this group the agent changes a project that lives on your computer, so you can open it, scrub through the cuts and undo. The model your client uses still sees whatever text or frames the tools return; local means the media and project stay on your machine, not that the AI does.

Rushilo ships no AI of its own: your Claude Code, Codex or API key does the thinking, and your edits and the agent's share one undo history with named versions. Setup is on the setup page. Other desktop editors with MCP servers exist under licences we do not cover here; check each one's README and current licence before you rely on it.

DaVinci Resolve: the native server and the community one

The biggest change this autumn is that Resolve now has its own server. CineD reports that DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1, released September 8, 2026, adds a native MCP server that names Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, and that Python scripting moved to Studio in the same release. We could not read Blackmagic's own release page with our tools, so treat the details as reported.

Before 21.1, people connected Resolve through the community Resolve MCP, an MIT project that drives Resolve's scripting API and installs into Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and Codex. It is actively maintained, with a release the day before we checked. Both routes need Resolve Studio for full use. One commenter on r/ClaudeAI summed up the trade-off from the other side: an alternative editor had stopped them “buying DaVinci Resolve just to have access to the MCP server.” For whether Claude can drive Resolve at all, see Can Claude edit videos?

Cloud and API servers

Here the vendor holds the project. You sign in, footage is uploaded or linked, and the server is reached over the internet. That suits clipping and repurposing; it also means your footage leaves your computer and processing usually costs credits.

If where your footage goes is the deciding factor, the local vs cloud AI editing guide walks through each step. For one worked example of a host application and an MCP connection, see Claude and DaVinci Resolve.

Wrappers: Premiere, CapCut, Blender and FFmpeg

Premiere Pro. We found no official Adobe MCP server. A feature request for one was still open for voting on October 20, 2026. The most active community bridge, adobe_premiere_pro_mcp, is MIT licensed, controls Premiere through a panel, and has anonymous usage telemetry on by default, which is worth knowing before you point it at client work. For what Adobe’s own assistant and connector do and do not cover, read Claude and Premiere Pro.

CapCut. CapCut has an official CapCut x Codex plugin that registers a remote MCP server. When we read its installer on October 12, 2026, it skipped authorisation on US networks; recheck before relying on it. The details are in how Claude and CapCut actually connect. Community projects such as VectCutAPI instead write CapCut draft folders that you open in the app, which is not live control.

FFmpeg. Kinocut (Apache-2.0) wraps FFmpeg in 203 tools with quality checks and was updated the day we looked. Many older FFmpeg servers that still rank are stale: one of the most visible had its last commit in May 2025. With no timeline, every change is a new render, and a long tool list is a lot of context for the model. As one r/ClaudeAI commenter asked of a server with about 100 tools, “the more tools per MCP the more the agent tends to misunderstand when and how to use them.”

Blender. Blender-based servers exist, mostly for 3D scenes rather than editing recorded footage. The ones we found for Blender's video sequencer are hobby scale.

Remotion and code video

Remotion's own MCP page marks its documentation server as deprecated and says new installations are not recommended; Remotion points to Agent Skills instead, and Remotion Studio exposes WebMCP tools. Remotion builds videos from React code, so it suits animated explainers and templates rather than cutting a recorded take. Skill-based tools such as video-use also show up in these searches but are not MCP servers; they are compared in Claude video editing skills.

What changed under people's feet

  • Native beats bridge, sometimes. Resolve's native server arrived after most lists were written, and scripting moved to the paid edition.
  • Deprecations. Remotion deprecated its MCP in favour of skills.
  • Stale repos still rank. Several top GitHub results for “video editing mcp” had no commits for 9 to 21 months when we checked.
  • Licences move. At least one agent-ready editor switched later releases from an open-source licence to a proprietary one. Read the licence of the release you install.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best video editing MCP server?

There is no single best one, because the servers do different jobs. For a desktop timeline you can watch and undo, Rushilo runs on Mac and Windows from $19 once. To drive a professional editor, DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 has a native server. For clipping long videos, look at OpenClip or reap; for FFmpeg jobs, Kinocut. None of this is a test result.

What is a video editing MCP server?

It is a program that turns editing operations, such as importing media, cutting a clip, adding captions or exporting, into tools an AI client like Claude Code or Codex can call. The protocol only defines how tools are listed and called. What the server can change, and whether it runs on your computer or in a vendor's cloud, depends on the product.

Is there a video editing MCP server for Claude Code or Codex?

Yes, several. Local servers such as Rushilo and Kinocut, and hosted ones such as invideo and OpenClip, document setup for Claude Code or Codex. CineD reports that DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 names Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex as supported assistants. Check each row's documented clients, because support differs between products.

Is there an official Adobe Premiere Pro MCP server?

We found none as of October 20, 2026. A feature request for an official, Adobe-maintained Premiere Pro server was still open for voting on the Adobe Community forum, posted September 28. Community bridges exist, such as an MIT-licensed project that controls Premiere through a panel, but Adobe does not publish or support them.

Does Remotion have an MCP server?

Remotion's hosted documentation MCP is deprecated, and its own page says new installations are not recommended. Remotion points users to Agent Skills for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor instead, and Remotion Studio exposes WebMCP tools. Remotion builds videos from code, so it is not an editor for recorded footage.

Is there a free video editing MCP server?

Yes. Kinocut (Apache-2.0, built on FFmpeg) and the community DaVinci Resolve server (MIT) cost nothing, though the Resolve server needs Resolve Studio, a one-time purchase. You still need an AI plan for the client that calls them. OpenClip and reap offer free accounts but need paid credits to process video.

Do video editing MCP servers run locally?

Some do. Rushilo, Kinocut and the Resolve servers run on your computer, while invideo, OpenClip and reap run in the vendor's cloud and need an account. Local does not mean the AI is local: your client's model still receives whatever text or frames the tools return. Check where each step runs before using private footage.

Does CapCut have an MCP server?

CapCut has an official CapCut x Codex plugin that registers a remote MCP server; when we read its installer on October 12, 2026, it skipped authorisation on US networks, so recheck before relying on it. Community projects such as VectCutAPI write CapCut draft folders that you open in the app, which is not live control of the editor.

What does MCP stand for?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open-source standard for connecting AI applications such as Claude or ChatGPT to outside tools and data. In video editing, an MCP server lists actions like import, cut and export so the AI can call them. Rushilo runs a local MCP server, so your own Claude Code or Codex can drive the editor.

How is MCP different from an API?

An API is one service's own interface, written for developers. MCP is a shared protocol that tells an AI application which tools a server offers and how to call them, so one client can use many servers without custom code for each. An MCP server often wraps an ordinary API underneath it, so the two usually work together.
