Why are CapCut auto captions not working?
Short answer
CapCut's help page lists five causes when auto captions fail: poor audio or background noise, an unsupported or wrong language setting, a weak internet connection (caption generation often uses cloud processing), a muted or missing audio track, and an outdated app or software glitch. Check them in that order. CapCut's own pages also disagree on whether auto captions need Pro, so a missing button may be a plan limit. Checked October 20, 2026.
That list comes from CapCut's own help page on failing auto captions, which we read on October 20, 2026. The page gives fixes for the web version, the PC app and mobile, and it never mentions Pro, a subscription or a paywall. This guide goes through each cause with the steps that page supports. Where a step is our own common sense rather than CapCut guidance, we label it general troubleshooting.
Poor audio or background noise
- First thing to try
- Use a cleaner or louder source (general troubleshooting)
Unsupported or wrong language
- First thing to try
- Pick the spoken language by hand
Weak or unstable connection
- First thing to try
- Check the network, then retry
Muted or missing audio track
- First thing to try
- Unmute the clip and confirm audio is present
Software glitch or outdated app
- First thing to try
- Restart, refresh or update the app
| Cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|
| Poor audio or background noise | Use a cleaner or louder source (general troubleshooting) |
| Unsupported or wrong language | Pick the spoken language by hand |
| Weak or unstable connection | Check the network, then retry |
| Muted or missing audio track | Unmute the clip and confirm audio is present |
| Software glitch or outdated app | Restart, refresh or update the app |
How do I fix noise and language problems?
Both are about what the recogniser hears, so start here. They are also the cheapest to fix.
- 1Set the language yourself. CapCut lists an unsupported or incorrect language setting as a cause, and its PC steps say to pick the correct language. Choose the language that is actually spoken in the clip, not the app's interface language.
- 2Check the language is one CapCut supports. If the language is not on the list in the captions panel, that alone can explain a failure.
- 3Reduce background noise. CapCut names noise and poor audio quality as a cause. As general troubleshooting, try the clip with music or effects turned off, or replace it with a cleaner recording, to see whether the captions start working.
- 4Try a short, clear section first. General troubleshooting: caption a few seconds of clean speech. If that works, the problem is the audio, not the feature.
Even when captions do appear, they are a draft. YouTube's own help warns that automatic captions might misrepresent the spoken content due to mispronunciations, accents, dialects, or background noise. Check names, numbers and negations before you export.
How do I fix connection and app problems?
CapCut says caption generation often uses cloud processing. That means your audio goes to a server and the text comes back, so a weak connection can stop the job. Match the fix to where you are editing.
Web
- What CapCut says to do
- Use Chrome or Edge, refresh the page and try again
PC
- What CapCut says to do
- Check your connection, restart the app and pick the correct language
Mobile
- What CapCut says to do
- Update the app from your store
| Where you edit | What CapCut says to do |
|---|---|
| Web | Use Chrome or Edge, refresh the page and try again |
| PC | Check your connection, restart the app and pick the correct language |
| Mobile | Update the app from your store |
Two general troubleshooting additions, not from CapCut: switch from Wi-Fi to a wired or steadier network if you can, and retry once the upload is not competing with other traffic. If the app is old, update it on every surface, since CapCut lists an outdated version as a cause on its own.
How do I fix a muted or missing audio track?
If CapCut hears nothing, it has nothing to transcribe. CapCut lists a muted or missing audio track as a cause. Our plain-logic checklist, general troubleshooting rather than CapCut text:
- Play the clip on the timeline and confirm you can hear speech.
- Make sure the clip or its audio is not muted and the volume is above zero.
- If you detached or replaced the audio, caption the track that carries the speech.
- If the file has no audio stream at all, re-export or re-import the original.
In what order should I try the fixes?
Start with the cheapest change that rules out the most. This order is our own general troubleshooting, built from CapCut's five causes, not a CapCut procedure.
- 1Set the spoken language by hand and retry. It takes ten seconds.
- 2Play the clip and confirm speech is audible and not muted.
- 3Check your internet connection, then restart the app or refresh the web page.
- 4Update the app to the current version on the device you are using.
- 5Retry on a short, clean section of the same clip. If that works, noise or length is the issue.
Change one thing at a time. If you change the language, the network and the app version in one go, you will not know which one helped, and you will not know what to try next time.
Is it a paywall?
Honest answer
We could not confirm. CapCut publishes two statements that contradict each other, and the help page on errors says nothing about plans.
CapCut's Standard vs Pro article, dated September 23, 2026, says an auto caption generator is exclusive to Pro users. CapCut's auto caption tool page says captions are converted to text free of charge. We read both on October 20, 2026 and cannot tell which applies to your account. We also found no CapCut page that says a paywall shows up as an error, so a button that is greyed out, hidden or failing may be a plan limit or may be a bug. Check your plan inside the app before you spend time on the fixes above, or after they all fail.
For prices and the dated history of what CapCut has said, see CapCut pricing and paywall changes. We do not repeat prices here.
What if it still fails?
Take the captioning out of CapCut. Export the audio, or the finished video, and caption it somewhere else. YouTube adds free automatic captions to uploads, cloud caption tools take a file, and Whisper models run on your own computer. Then bring an SRT file back or burn the captions in with the tool you used. Review the text whichever route you pick. If timing drifts afterwards, here is how to fix subtitles that are out of sync.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my CapCut auto captions not working?
CapCut's help page lists poor audio or background noise, the wrong language setting, a weak internet connection because captioning uses cloud processing, a muted track, and an outdated app. Check those first. We found no CapCut page saying a paywall causes the error, so a missing button may be a plan limit or a bug. Checked October 20, 2026.
How do I get CapCut auto captions to work?
Work through CapCut's five listed causes in order: clean up noisy audio, set the spoken language by hand, check your internet connection, make sure the audio track is not muted, and update the app. On the web version, CapCut says to use Chrome or Edge, then refresh and retry. Restart the app on a PC.
Why do CapCut auto captions get stuck partway?
CapCut's help page does not name a percentage. It does say caption generation often uses cloud processing, so a weak or interrupted connection is the first thing to check. As general troubleshooting, not CapCut guidance, try a steadier network, restart the app, and retry on a shorter clip to see whether length matters.
Is auto caption free in CapCut?
We could not confirm. CapCut's resource article says the auto caption generator is exclusive to Pro, while its auto caption tool page says captions are converted free of charge. We read both on October 20, 2026 and cannot tell which applies to your account. The help page on errors never mentions Pro.
Is auto captions a Pro feature in CapCut?
CapCut's resource article, comparing Standard and Pro, lists an auto caption generator as exclusive to Pro users. Its tool page for the same feature says free of charge. The two pages contradict each other, so check your own app or CapCut's current plan page before paying, and see our dated log for prices.
Does CapCut caption on my device or in the cloud?
CapCut's help page says caption generation often uses cloud processing. That is why it lists a weak or unstable internet connection as a cause of failure. If you would rather keep audio on your computer, a local tool such as Whisper on your own machine avoids the upload, though it needs setup and can be slow.
What can I do if CapCut auto captions keep failing?
Export the audio, or the whole video, and caption it in another tool. Options include YouTube's free automatic captions for uploads, a cloud caption tool, or local Whisper, then bring an SRT file back or burn the captions in elsewhere. Review the text either way, because automatic captions can mishear names and accents.
What is the best way to caption a video if CapCut fails?
It depends on your output. For plain captions, YouTube's automatic captions are free for uploads. For styled word captions, cloud tools exist. We make Rushilo, which makes captions with a local Whisper model on Mac or Windows for a one-time price, but it is not fast and is not a phone app. Try a short clip first.
