How to connect Claude Desktop to a local video editor

A local MCP server is a config entry, not a sign-in. Paste it once, restart Claude, and keep the editor open.

How do you connect Claude Desktop to a video editor?

Short answer

Claude Desktop connects to a local video editor when you add the editor's MCP server to claude_desktop_config.json and fully restart the app. With Rushilo, open Connect agent, copy the MCP JSON, paste it under mcpServers in Claude Desktop's config, quit and reopen Claude, then confirm the server under Connectors. Keep Rushilo open while Claude works. Cursor takes the same JSON in its own mcp.json. If it fails, the Claude logs say why.

This guide covers one setup: Claude Desktop, the chat app, talking to a desktop timeline editor on the same computer. We documented it from Rushilo’s released setup code and Anthropic’s documentation. We did not run a full Claude Desktop session against Rushilo while writing it, so the interface labels below are the ones the docs gave on the dates we checked, and Claude Desktop changes often. If a label has moved, the idea stays the same.

We make Rushilo, so weigh the Rushilo specifics accordingly. The config steps themselves follow Anthropic’s and the MCP project’s documentation and apply to any local MCP server.

What does connector mean here?

People search for a “video editor Claude connector”, but Claude Desktop reaches tools in more than one way, and the difference decides your steps.

Local MCP server (config file)

How you add it
Paste an entry into claude_desktop_config.json and restart
Fits
A program already installed on your computer, such as a desktop editor

Desktop extension

How you add it
Install a .mcpb file or browse extensions in Settings
Fits
Packaged local servers Anthropic or others distribute

Remote connector

How you add it
Enter a URL and sign in
Fits
Cloud services that host their own server

Anthropic’s help article describes desktop extensions as single-click installable local servers and points to Settings for installing one. Rushilo uses the first row. There is no URL to paste, no sign-in and no account with us for the connection. Rushilo’s server runs on your computer and talks to the open app. If you came looking for a directory listing with an install button, this is not that; it is a config entry.

What do you need before you start?

  • Rushilo installed and open with a project loaded. It is a one-time purchase from $19; Buy Rushilo or download it to try the setup.
  • Claude Desktop installed and up to date. Anthropic lists macOS 13 or later and Windows 10 or later, with a Linux beta.
  • A Claude plan. Claude Desktop chat is listed on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. For servers added through the config file, Anthropic’s pages say nothing about a plan requirement as of October 20, 2026, so we do not state one. Check Settings on your account.
  • Optional: Cursor, if you prefer to drive the editor from there.

What are the steps?

  1. 1Copy the JSON from Rushilo. Open Connect agent and find the section titled Claude Desktop, Cursor and other MCP apps. Choose Copy MCP JSON. Rushilo fills in the paths for your machine, so copy it from the app rather than from a web page.
  2. 2Open the config file. In Claude Desktop, go to Settings, then Developer, then Edit Config. That opens claude_desktop_config.json.
  3. 3Paste it under mcpServers. If the file is empty, paste the whole block. If it already lists servers, add the rushilo entry beside them instead of replacing them.
  4. 4Quit Claude fully and reopen it. Closing the window is not enough. The MCP documentation says to completely quit Claude Desktop and restart it.
  5. 5Confirm the connection. Click the plus button in the chat box and choose Connectors to see connected servers and their tools. Developer settings show connection status and logs.
  6. 6Try a small, reversible request. Ask Claude to read your project and describe the timeline. Then ask for one small edit and check it in Rushilo. If you do not like it, undo it in the app.

What to ask first

Start with requests that change nothing, so you learn what Claude can see before it touches the timeline. Ask it to list the clips on the timeline and say how long the project is. Ask it to look at a few frames and describe them. Ask it to read the transcript of one clip and quote the first sentence. Only then ask for an edit, and keep it narrow: remove one filler word, trim the start of one clip, or add one caption line.

Check each result in Rushilo itself, not in the chat summary. A chat reply can describe an edit that did not land, and the timeline is the record. Saving a named version before a larger session gives you a clean point to return to if a run goes wrong.

What the pasted block looks like

The shape is a standard MCP entry. The values below are placeholders. Do not type these; Rushilo writes the real ones, which depend on where the app is installed.

Shape only, copy the real JSON from Rushilo
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "some-other-server": {
      "command": "<existing entry, leave it alone>"
    },
    "rushilo": {
      "command": "<path filled in by Rushilo>",
      "args": ["<path to the bundled MCP shim>"],
      "env": {
        "ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE": "1",
        "RUSHILO_DATA_DIR": "<this app's data folder>"
      }
    }
  }
}

Rushilo may add a skills-folder setting too. Keep whatever the app gives you. Both entries sit inside the single top-level mcpServers object, with a comma between them.

macOS

Config file location
~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Windows

Config file location
%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json

Those paths come from the MCP documentation for local servers, version dated July 28, 2026. The Edit Config button opens the same file, so you rarely need the path.

One more habit helps: after you change anything in the config, repeat the whole sequence rather than part of it. Edit, save, quit Claude completely, reopen, then look under Connectors again. Skipping the confirm step is how people end up debugging a prompt when the real problem is that the server never loaded. If the server is listed with its tools, the connection is fine and any remaining trouble is in the request or the project.

How do you connect Cursor instead?

Cursor reads the same mcpServers JSON that Rushilo gives you, in its own config file. The steps, file locations and troubleshooting are in How to connect Cursor to a local video editor.

What if it does not connect?

Work from the most common causes to the logs.

  1. Rushilo is not open. Open the app with a project, then retry. The Connect agent screen tells you to keep it open while the agent works.
  2. Only the window was closed. Quit Claude from the menu or tray and reopen. The MCP project says edits to the config need a full restart to take effect.
  3. The JSON is broken. A missing comma or a second mcpServers key stops the file loading. Merge the entries into one object and check the syntax.
  4. The paths went stale. If you moved or reinstalled Rushilo, copy the JSON from Connect agent again. Setups pasted before version 1.1.0 keep working after the setting names changed, according to our release notes.
  5. Read the logs. On macOS they are in ~/Library/Logs/Claude, on Windows in %APPDATA%\Claude\logs. mcp.log records connection problems and mcp-server-rushilo.log holds that server’s own error output.

The MCP documentation also says to use absolute paths and notes a Windows case where a missing %APPDATA% folder causes errors; its troubleshooting section covers the fix. Long jobs such as transcription or export may run into a client time limit. We did not test that in Claude Desktop, so if a call stops early, check mcp-server-rushilo.log and use Rushilo’s export status and cancel tools rather than starting the job twice.

Claude Desktop or Claude Code?

Both reach Rushilo’s tools. The difference is setup and where you work. For the full menu of ways to edit with Claude Code, read how to edit video with Claude Code; for other editors that expose MCP, see video editing MCP servers.

Plans come from Anthropic’s install page. If you want conversation and light edits, Claude Desktop is fine. If you want the agent working beside your timeline, the built-in panel is simpler. Whichever you use, review the cuts before you trust them with a project.

Where does your data go?

Rushilo has no AI of its own and receives nothing from the connection. Your project and media stay on your computer. What Claude sees is what the tools return, such as transcript text, and that passes through your own Claude plan under Anthropic’s terms. Rushilo’s server reaches the app over a local socket guarded by a launch token; we read that in the code and did not audit it. Use the MCP evaluation checklist to test the connection afterwards, and the setup page for the short version of these steps.

Frequently asked questions

How do you connect Claude Desktop to a video editor?

Add the editor's MCP server to Claude Desktop's config file and restart the app. In Rushilo, choose Connect agent, copy the MCP JSON, open Settings, Developer, Edit Config in Claude Desktop, paste it into mcpServers, fully quit and reopen Claude, then keep Rushilo open while you ask for edits.

Where is the Claude Desktop MCP config file?

Open Settings, Developer, Edit Config. On macOS the file is ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json and on Windows it is %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json. Servers sit under a top-level mcpServers object, and you must fully quit and reopen Claude after editing it. Source: the Model Context Protocol documentation, checked October 20, 2026.

Why does Claude Desktop not show my MCP server?

Check that the pasted JSON is valid, that you fully quit and reopened Claude rather than closing the window, and that the paths are still correct. Then open the logs: mcp.log records connection problems and mcp-server-rushilo.log holds the server's own output. Also confirm Rushilo is open.

Does the video editor have to stay open?

Yes, keep Rushilo open while Claude works. Rushilo's own Connect agent screen says so, and the server reaches your project through the running app. We did not test what Claude Desktop shows if you quit the editor mid-session, so reopen Rushilo and retry if a tool call fails.

Does Claude Desktop need a paid plan for this?

Anthropic's pages we read do not state a plan requirement for local servers added through the config file, as of October 20, 2026. Claude Desktop itself runs on every plan. Check Settings on your account. Whatever plan you use, Claude bills it; Rushilo adds no AI of its own.

Can Cursor connect to Rushilo too?

Rushilo's Connect agent screen offers the same MCP JSON for Claude Desktop, Cursor and other MCP apps. Cursor reads MCP servers from ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project or .cursor/mcp.json for one project. Paste, restart Cursor, and keep Rushilo open. We did not run Cursor against Rushilo ourselves.

What is the difference between Claude Desktop and Claude Code for editing video?

Both can reach the same Rushilo tools. Claude Code registers the server with one command and also runs inside Rushilo's built-in agent panel. Claude Desktop needs a config edit and a restart, and it is a chat app. Anthropic lists Claude Code on paid plans only, while Claude Desktop chat is on every plan.

What is the best way to connect Claude to a video editor?

Choose local or cloud first. For a timeline you can watch and undo on your own computer, Rushilo connects to Claude Desktop with one pasted JSON block and is a one-time purchase. For footage already held in a cloud editor, that vendor's remote connector uses a URL and sign-in instead.
