How do you blur part of a screen recording?

Short answer

To blur sensitive information in a screen recording, add a region over the relevant part of the footage, set its time span, adjust its position when the content moves, and inspect the exported video. Rushilo supports blur and pixelate regions with motion keys. Use fictional data or replace the recording when obscuring the picture is insufficient.

A blur box can look correct on one frame and miss the same text after a scroll. Treat the job as a review of every appearance of the information, including transitions and the exported file. For a new recording, using fictional data is usually less work than repairing real data afterward.

Rushilo supports blur and pixelate regions on video clips. Its recording and editing features are documented in the release notes. The workflow below uses those tools; it does not promise that any particular blur strength makes information unrecoverable.

Choose between replacement, removal and blur

You have not recorded yet

Useful approach
Use a demo account with fictional records
What to check
Notifications, browser profile, saved searches and secondary panels

The sensitive shot adds nothing

Useful approach
Cut it out
What to check
The explanation still makes sense and no later shot repeats it

The surrounding interface is needed

Useful approach
Place a blur or pixelate region
What to check
All letters and surrounding clues are obscured throughout the shot

The field moves while you scroll

Useful approach
Adjust the region over time or divide the shot
What to check
The region covers the path between its positions

High-risk information remains visible

Useful approach
Replace the source recording
What to check
The new capture contains no real record to conceal

A product walkthrough can show the shape of a customer table without using customer records. Replace names, addresses and account references before capture when you control the account. Editing pixels later does not remove the original information from your source media or project folder.

Place and time a region in Rushilo

  1. 1Save a version. Keep a named version before editing. Finish major cuts first so the coverage review uses the timeline you intend to deliver.
  2. 2Find the first appearance. Select the footage clip and stop at the first frame containing the field. Check the whole frame, including browser bars and notifications.
  3. 3Add the region. In the clip's Blur and pixelate controls, add a box over the information. Leave a margin around the text rather than tracing the exact letter edges.
  4. 4Set its time span. Cover the entire interval in which the information is visible. Start before it appears and end after it disappears when the surrounding footage permits.
  5. 5Inspect changes. Review scrolling, window movement, zooms, cuts and repeat visits. Adjust the region's position or size where necessary.
  6. 6Export and inspect. Review the saved video at its delivery resolution. Check the beginning and end of each covered interval, then watch the complete result.

If you recorded on a Mac in Rushilo, the focused recording editor has Look controls and a Send to Timeline workflow. Existing footage can also be edited on Mac or Windows. Screen capture itself is Mac only; importing a Windows recording does not change that limitation.

Handle scrolling and moving information

Movement needs coverage between positions

Rushilo regions can have position and size keys over time. Between keys the rectangle moves in a straight line. That is useful for predictable motion, but it is not automatic text recognition or subject tracking. If a field jumps when a dialog opens, a smooth move between two positions may uncover it or cover the wrong area.

For irregular movement, add more position changes, use a larger region, or cut the shot into sections with different coverage. Check the actual images between adjustments, not just the moments where you positioned the box. Recheck after splitting or replacing footage; a previously reviewed clip does not certify its new neighbours.

Source time differs from timeline time

When an agent edits regions, their start, end and motion keys use the clip’s source time. A trimmed clip placed later on the timeline may have different source and timeline timestamps. Ask the agent to inspect the project and the selected clip before setting the region, rather than copying a displayed timeline time into every argument.

The human-readable prompt below leaves that translation to the connected agent while making the review requirement explicit.

Example editing brief
Save a version before these changes. On the selected clip, obscure the email column for every frame in which it appears. Inspect the clip's source range and existing regions first. Account for the scroll and the later return to this screen. Show me frames before, during and after each change. Do not export or publish until I have reviewed the coverage.

Connect your own agent using the Rushilo setup instructions. The agent can inspect frames and edit regions, but a few sampled frames are not a complete privacy review.

Check the delivery, not just the edit

First and last covered frames

Why it matters
A field may appear for a frame before a region starts or after it ends

Scrolls, menus and transitions

Why it matters
Information can reappear somewhere outside the original box

Audio and captions

Why it matters
A spoken name or transcribed address can disclose what the picture hides

Video thumbnail and poster frame

Why it matters
A publishing platform can choose a different visible moment

The shared file

Why it matters
An editable project or original capture contains more information than a finished export

Play the result full-screen and pause where text could become readable. Review it at the size your audience will receive. If the field remains inferable from nearby text, another weak blur is unlikely to solve the underlying problem: replace the shot or remove the information before recording.

For a future capture, use the customer training workflow to prepare a clean account and a review checklist. If automatic zoom changes the composition, review it with these zoom criteria before signing off on the final video.
