Can you make a landscape video vertical without cropping?
Short answer
You can put a landscape video in a vertical canvas without cropping by fitting the whole picture and leaving space above and below it. Filling the canvas requires cropping, changing the composition, or generating additional picture content. In Rushilo, choose contain to preserve the source or review a crop per shot; cursor-following reframing uses recorded activity rather than face tracking.
Changing the canvas to 9:16 and preserving the complete 16:9 picture leaves space above and below it. Filling a 9:16 canvas with the same picture removes substantial width. Decide which information matters before choosing the setting.
For a software tutorial, preserving both a sidebar and its result may matter more than filling the phone screen. For a single speaker, a tighter composition may work well. The correct choice depends on the shot, not the platform name in the export preset.
Choose a composition for the content
Contain the wide picture
- What it preserves
- The complete source image, with unused space
- Where it fits
- Interfaces, slides, two speakers or anything spread across the frame
Cover the vertical canvas
- What it preserves
- A narrower portion fills the frame
- Where it fits
- One subject that remains inside the crop
Move the crop over time
- What it preserves
- Different parts of the source at different moments
- Where it fits
- An action that moves between parts of the screen
Rebuild the shot
- What it preserves
- A new composition designed for the vertical frame
- Where it fits
- Wide charts or interfaces that remain unreadable when fitted
| Approach | What it preserves | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Contain the wide picture | The complete source image, with unused space | Interfaces, slides, two speakers or anything spread across the frame |
| Cover the vertical canvas | A narrower portion fills the frame | One subject that remains inside the crop |
| Move the crop over time | Different parts of the source at different moments | An action that moves between parts of the screen |
| Rebuild the shot | A new composition designed for the vertical frame | Wide charts or interfaces that remain unreadable when fitted |
A background or title can make unused space intentional, but it does not enlarge tiny text inside the retained picture. If the important interface is unreadable on a phone, crop to one task at a time or capture a simpler view.
Online conversion tools also distinguish resizing, cropping and rotation. OnlineConverter’s options are one example. Rotating ordinary upright footage 90 degrees changes its orientation; it does not create a readable upright composition.
See the geometric tradeoff
Consider a hypothetical 1920 by 1080 source placed in a 1080 by 1920 canvas. With contain, scaling the width to 1080 makes the picture 607.5 pixels high before raster rounding. Roughly 1312.5 pixels of vertical space remain, split above and below if centred.
With cover, scaling the height to 1920 makes the picture about 3413.3 pixels wide. A 1080-pixel canvas shows about 31.6% of that scaled width. In source coordinates, the visible window is about 607.5 pixels wide. This derived geometry explains why a centred portrait crop can lose a sidebar and a button even when they looked close together in the original.
These are aspect-ratio calculations, not measurements of a particular export. Extra zoom, a stage, padding or a clip transform can change what is visible.
Reframe in Rushilo
- 1Keep the landscape master. Save a named version before changing the project format. Do not lose the edit intended for desktop or long-form delivery.
- 2Choose a complete moment. If you are making a teaser, select an excerpt that contains its own setup and result before changing its composition.
- 3Set the vertical canvas. Rushilo's Vertical preset is 1080 by 1920. Changing the project size keeps clip timing; review the fitted pictures in the new canvas.
- 4Choose contain or cover per shot. Preserve the whole image where the surrounding context is needed. Use a tighter composition only where the lost area is expendable.
- 5Review the motion. Inspect the beginning, every important action, and the end. A subject that fits initially can move out of the crop later.
- 6Redo captions and titles. Position and size text for the new canvas. Keep essential labels clear of the destination player's controls and preview the actual upload.
The Rushilo release notes describe vertical reframing and camera layouts. For agent editing, project.video changes the canvas, clip.transform selects contain or cover, and clip.reframe can centre a crop or follow recorded cursor activity.
Cursor following is not face tracking
A screen recording with cursor activity can provide a path for the crop. Ordinary imported footage may lack that activity. Rushilo’s cursor-following feature does not identify the speaker’s face or guarantee that every important interface element stays visible.
If a cursor clicks a menu on the left and the result appears on the right, following the cursor alone can miss the result. Review the action and its outcome together, then adjust the composition or use a wider contained view.
Save a version called Landscape master. Make a 1080 by 1920 version of this excerpt. Preserve the full screen wherever a cropped view would hide a step or its result. For the single-speaker shot, propose a tighter composition and show frames at the start, middle and end. Do not assume cursor following tracks a face. Reposition captions for the vertical canvas and leave the final export for my review. This is an editing brief for your own connected agent, rather than a claim that one prompt produces a checked final video. Set up the connection, inspect the proposed changes and refine shots that fail the review.
Validate the final version
Watch on the smallest screen you expect readers to use. Can you read the field name, follow the action and see the result without pausing repeatedly? Does the frame move so often that it becomes difficult to locate the interface?
Check the destination’s current upload rules separately from your composition. YouTube documents the shape and duration requirements for Shorts in its Shorts guidance; a vertical file alone does not establish its eligibility.
Use the automatic zoom review guide if zooms multiply the crop, and the compression workflow if small interface text deteriorates in the export. Keep separate files for the reviewed landscape and vertical versions.
