What are the three jobs behind “long video to Shorts”?

Short answer

Making Shorts from a long video is three jobs: pick a stretch that stands alone, reframe it from 16:9 to vertical, then add captions and check the result. A Short can run up to three minutes if it is vertical or square and was uploaded after October 15, 2024. Cloud clippers do the picking for you but meter your source minutes and take your upload. A local editor plus your own AI lets you choose each clip. Checked October 20, 2026.

Search results for this topic are mostly upload boxes that promise ten Shorts in one click. That sells one job, finding the moments, and quietly bundles two others. Here are all three:

  1. Pick. Choose stretches of the long video that make sense without the rest of it.
  2. Reframe. Turn a 16:9 picture into a vertical or square one without cutting off the speaker.
  3. Caption and check. Add a hook and captions, then confirm the file meets the Shorts rules.

In this page a clip is the stretch you cut, and a Short is the vertical upload built from it. Everything below was checked on October 20, 2026, and the dated facts link to their source.

How do you find moments worth clipping?

Pick clips that pass four tests. The clip stands alone without the setup. It carries one idea. It has a payoff you can end on, in the last seconds. And it does not give away so much that nobody visits the original, or so little that it gets scrolled past. A Reddit commenter on r/SmallYTChannel put the last point this way: the risk is giving too much or too little.

Fifteen to 60 seconds is a sensible default for a talking-head clip, and YouTube allows up to three minutes (see the specs below). The fastest honest method is to read, not scrub: get a transcript, shortlist five to eight candidates, and watch only those. One creator in the same thread describes a manual pass that “takes about 30 minutes to get 4 to 8 shorts”, which is a single report, not a benchmark. Our guide to text-based video editing covers reading footage as text.

Automatic clippers score moments for you, and that is a real time saver on a large back catalogue. We have not tested their scoring, so we cannot say how often their picks stand alone. Whoever picks, do the human pass. Another commenter, on r/NewTubers, advised a quick check that each clip keeps its full context and source label.

How do you reframe 16:9 to 9:16 without cutting off the speaker?

You have three honest options. Cover fills the vertical frame and crops the sides, so you position the crop on the speaker. Contain fits the whole picture with bars above and below. Rebuild means changing the shot, for example a tighter crop with graphics in the free space. The maths is why cover needs care: 1080 / 1920 divided by 16 / 9 is 0.3164, so a 1920 by 1080 source shown at full height keeps only about 31.6 percent of its width, as our landscape to vertical video guide also works out. That guide owns contain versus cover in detail.

Check the first, middle and last frame of every clip. A speaker who leans or gestures can leave the window mid-sentence even when the opening frame looks fine.

What should captions and the hook look like?

State the payoff in the first two or three seconds, and keep captions on for the whole clip, because many people watch Shorts with the sound off. Rushilo's short-form recipe, which is our own default and not a YouTube rule, uses animated captions of two or three words on one line, kept in the middle third of the frame so the player buttons do not cover them. End on the payoff or an end card.

If you want the captions made on your own computer, the offline Whisper guide explains the options. For whether to bake them in or ship a separate file, see burned-in versus closed captions. Shorts are watched as burned-in text, so burned-in is the usual choice here.

What YouTube's help pages say, read October 20, 2026. Neither page shows a last-updated date.

Many pages still say Shorts max out at 60 seconds. Read the three-minute Shorts page and the create Shorts from your videos page yourself before you rely on either number, since policy pages change.

What do automatic clippers cost, and where does the file go?

Credits meter the minutes you upload, not the Shorts you get. Vizard says so in its own words: one credit is one minute of video, and every uploaded minute costs a credit. Opus Clip's pricing page does not define a credit in the text we read, but reviewers report the same ratio, so confirm it on Opus before you buy. We did not find OpenClip's ratio and do not compare its minutes.

Plans read on vendor pricing pages, October 20, 2026. US prices. Credits are per month on a monthly plan.

A worked example, using the reported Opus ratio: a 60 minute episode costs 60 source minutes before you see a single clip, so Opus Pro's 300 credits cover about five such episodes a month. Vizard's free 60 credits are one hour of video. One Reddit user notes you can crop out Opus's watermark; we would not, since it costs picture and we did not check the terms.

CapCut is the free baseline for people who pick clips by eye: creators in that thread say they drop the full video in and cut by hand. Its online long-video tool is a cloud clipper too, which uploads your file, finds highlights and generates clips; the page we read states no price or watermark policy. For CapCut pricing history, see our CapCut pricing log. Clipchamp is another manual route: it states free 480p export has no watermark, and 720p and 1080p need premium.

Where the file goes matters for client or unreleased footage. A cloud tool needs the upload; the argument for and against is in local versus cloud AI video editing.

What is a local workflow in Rushilo?

We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly. Rushilo is a desktop editor for Mac and Windows that your own AI (Claude Code, Codex or a key you bring) drives. It ships no AI. It has no automatic clip scoring and no one-click batch of ten Shorts; you choose each clip, and the connected AI helps. Its short-form skill is the recipe the AI follows:

  1. Transcribe the video. Rushilo uses a local Whisper model when it is downloaded, or your own OpenAI, Groq or Gemini key. A long video takes a while.
  2. The AI reads the captions, picks the best 15 to 60 seconds, and says which and why. It does this one clip at a time.
  3. It cuts the segment and removes the rest with a ripple delete, then tightens pauses. See remove silence and filler words.
  4. It sets the project to the vertical preset, 1080 by 1920. A wide picture is first fitted with bars; to fill the frame it sets the clip to cover and moves it so the speaker stays in shot. You position the speaker; there is no face tracking.
  5. It adds a hook title in the first two or three seconds and animated captions throughout.
  6. It checks frames at the hook, middle and end, and you can undo any step in one move.

There is a second tool worth knowing and easy to misread. rushilo_moments scans the transcript for spots that call for an on-screen graphic: numbers, percentages, money, comparisons, steps and lists. It is not a clip finder and does not rate hooks or standalone-ness. Use it after you have chosen a clip, to add a stat or step graphic.

You bring your own file, such as the original from your drive. We did not verify importing a YouTube link, so we do not claim it. Rushilo costs from $19 to buy, with no per-minute credits; your AI plan is billed separately by its provider. Set it up with the setup guide, or see how the AI side works in can Claude edit videos. For a video podcast episode itself, see video podcasts.

A rule of thumb. Our judgement, not a measurement.

What are the limits?

  • Rushilo has no face or speaker tracking and no automatic virality score.
  • You need an AI you already pay for. Rushilo ships none, and its price does not include one. See Buy Rushilo if that suits you.
  • We read the vendor pages and did not test the clippers, so we make no claim about their output quality.
  • We could not verify YouTube's reused-content rules for clips. Read YouTube's current monetization policy before posting clips of other people's videos.

When a clip is ready, our YouTube export settings guide covers the file.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make YouTube Shorts from a long video?

Pick a stretch that makes sense on its own, cut to it, make the frame vertical or square, add captions and a hook, then upload it. A Short can run up to three minutes if it is vertical or square and was uploaded after October 15, 2024. YouTube's mobile Edit into a Short tool selects up to 60 seconds of a published video.

How long can a YouTube Short be in 2026?

Up to three minutes. YouTube's help page says videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 with a square or vertical aspect ratio up to three minutes long are categorized as Shorts. The in-app Edit into a Short tool on a published video selects up to 60 seconds. Checked on support.google.com on October 20, 2026.

Can I turn a YouTube video into a Short on a PC?

Yes, with a desktop editor. Bring the file, cut the segment, set a vertical 1080 by 1920 canvas, position the speaker, add captions, export and upload. YouTube documents its own Remix route to Edit into a Short for the mobile app, so a PC needs an editor. Rushilo runs on Mac and Windows and works with your own AI.

What is the best tool to turn a long video into Shorts?

It depends on the job. For clipping a big back catalogue with minimal effort, an automatic clipper such as Opus Clip or Vizard is fastest, but it meters your source minutes and takes an upload. For a few carefully chosen clips on your own machine, Rushilo works with your own AI and has no per-minute credits. For one clip from a public upload on a phone, YouTube's Edit into a Short is free.

Do AI clippers upload my video?

Cloud clippers process footage on their servers. Opus Clip's pricing page lists local video import up to 10GB per video, which is an upload. A local editor keeps the file on your computer, though a connected AI works from what you let it read, and your AI provider's terms apply to that. Check each tool's privacy policy for how long files are kept.

How many source minutes do credits cost?

Vizard states that one credit is one minute of video, and every minute you upload costs a credit, so a 60 minute episode uses 60 credits. Reviewers report the same for Opus Clip, whose Starter plan lists 150 credits a month and Pro lists 300. Credits count minutes you upload, not the Shorts you get. Checked on October 20, 2026.

How do I keep the speaker in frame when going vertical?

A 1920 by 1080 video shown at full height in a 1080 by 1920 canvas keeps only about 31.6 percent of the width, so a centred crop can cut off the speaker. Move the crop so the face sits in the middle, or fit the whole picture with bars, and check the first, middle and last frame. Rushilo does not track faces.

How do I make Shorts from a long video without a watermark?

Free plans of cloud clippers usually add one: Opus Clip and Vizard both list a watermark on their free tiers, and OpenClip's trial clips carry one until the first paid charge. Options are a paid plan, a manual editor whose free export has no mark (Clipchamp's free 480p export is unmarked), or an editor you own. Checked October 20, 2026.

How do I post a video without it turning into a Short?

Upload it in a landscape shape or make it longer than three minutes. YouTube's help page says square or vertical uploads of up to three minutes are categorized as Shorts, so a normal 16:9 video stays a regular video. Export a landscape project to keep it off the Shorts shelf.
