What does a 10-minute AI voiceover cost?

Short answer

A 10-minute voiceover is about 1,500 words and 9,000 characters (our assumptions). On the pay-per-use APIs from ElevenLabs, OpenAI and Google it costs roughly 9 cents to 72 cents per clean take, from vendor pages checked October 22, 2026. YouTube's written policy targets mass-produced, templated content rather than AI voices, and its AI label covers realistic synthetic content that makes a real person say something they did not. Rushilo places the audio on your timeline using your own key.

Most pages about AI voices sell the voice and skip the bill. This one prices a single concrete job, a 10-minute narration, from each vendor's own pricing page, so you can scale it to your script. Every price below was read on October 22, 2026. Vendors change prices often, so treat the dates as part of the data.

Our assumptions, which are planning figures and not vendor numbers: narration runs at 150 words per minute, and a word averages 6 characters including the space and ordinary punctuation. The formula is minutes x 150 x 6 = characters, so 10 x 150 x 6 = 9,000 characters. Real scripts vary, roughly 5.5 to 6.5 characters per word, so scale the figures for yours.

Generation cost of one clean 10-minute take (about 9,000 characters). Rows marked estimate rest on an assumed audio length. Prices read October 22, 2026.

Three things stand out. First, one clean take costs between about 9 cents and 72 cents on every metered API in the table. The plans look more expensive per script only because you are buying a month. Second, ElevenLabs v3 and v4 cost about 5.3 times Gemini 3.8 Flash at today's prices, and about 2.6 times once Gemini's price changes on January 1, 2027, per Google's page. Third, the real cost is retakes. Five takes of a 10-minute script is $3.60 on ElevenLabs v3 and about $0.68 on Gemini 3.8 Flash. That is arithmetic, not a measured session.

Request limits matter too, because a 10-minute script rarely fits in one call. ElevenLabs lists 5,000 characters per request for v3, 10,000 for v2 Multilingual and 40,000 for the Flash and Turbo tiers. OpenAI's model page caps gpt-4o-mini-tts input at 2,000 tokens. Splitting the script into sections is normal, and it also lets you retake one paragraph instead of the whole video. First-month offers on subscriptions change, so the plan rows use list prices. Does YouTube allow AI voiceover and pay for it?

YouTube's written policy judges the content, not the voice. We read the channel monetization policies on October 22, 2026. The newest dated note on the page is July 15, 2025, which renamed “repetitious content” to “inauthentic content” and says it clarifies this “includes content that is repetitive or mass-produced”. The page can change without a new note, so check it again before you rely on it.

Among content that is not eligible, it lists “AI-generated content made with generic or unoriginal templates giving the impression of mass production without adding the creator's original, authentic insights or perspective”, and channels whose videos “feel interchangeable from video to video”. Among what is fine, it lists “content that utilizes creative tools to assist in delivering a unique, well-researched, or creative narrative, like using AI to edit your video scripts”. It adds that if you use automated tools or templates, the final product must still demonstrate your creative vision and provide educational or entertainment value.

We searched the page for voice, narration, TTS and speech. The only voiceover mentions are about reused movie scenes and reaction videos, so the policy does not name AI voices at all. The accurate summary is that the written policy targets mass-produced, templated, low-value content whatever voice reads it. We cannot see how channels are reviewed, so nobody can promise you monetisation. A script with your own research and angle is the part the policy asks for.

Do you have to tick the AI label on YouTube?

Only for realistic content that could mislead. YouTube's GenAI disclosure page (read October 22, 2026; it shows no date) says creators must disclose GenAI content that makes a real person appear to say or do something they didn't do, alters footage of a real event or place, generates a realistic scene that didn't occur, or creates music that is the main focus of the video. Its example: “Making it appear as if someone gave advice that they did not actually give.”

The not-required list includes production assistance such as using generative AI to “create or improve a video outline, script, thumbnail, title, or infographic”, caption creation, voice or audio repair, and “cloning one's own voice to create voice overs or dubs”. Our reading, which is not legal advice: a generic synthetic narrator reading your own script is not on the must-disclose list, and a voice that sounds like a real person who did not say it is the risky case. Cloning anyone else is the one to avoid.

The same page says disclosing alone “won't limit a video's audience or impact its eligibility to earn money”, that YouTube may apply a label itself, and that creators who consistently choose not to disclose may face a manual label or penalties, including suspension from the YouTube Partner Program. If you are unsure, tick it.

What does the voice provider require?

The provider has its own rules, separate from YouTube's. OpenAI's text-to-speech guide says its usage policies require a clear disclosure to end users that the TTS voice they hear is AI-generated and not a human voice. ElevenLabs shows a commercial licence as a feature of its paid Starter plan and not of the free plan; we did not read its terms, so check them before you publish. Google lists its free Gemini tier as data used to improve its products, which matters if the script is unpublished.

Two dates affect any choice you make today. OpenAI says its current TTS models, tts-1, tts-1-hd and gpt-4o-mini-tts, are scheduled to shut down on January 6, 2027, and that the named replacement is not supported by the speech endpoint, per its deprecations page. Gemini's TTS price changes on January 1, 2027, per Google's pricing page. Any “cheapest” claim, including ours, has a short shelf life.

Which AI voice generator is best for videos?

It depends on whether you are optimising for quality, cost or a one-app workflow. We did not generate audio on any provider for this page, so we make no claim of our own about voice quality. For quality, reviewers are the better guide: a March 2026 moonb.io test ranks ElevenLabs first, which is one reviewer's opinion. For cost per script, the table above puts Gemini Flash-Lite and OpenAI tts-1 lowest and ElevenLabs v3 and v4 highest on pay-per-use.

If you already live in an editor, the in-app options are different trades. Descript calls its feature AI speech and sells it through monthly credits, and CapCut offers text to speech that is free to try. Neither publishes a per-script price, so compare plans, as in Descript vs CapCut, is Descript worth it and CapCut's pricing log.

How do you add an AI voiceover to a video, and where does Rushilo fit?

The steps are the same in any editor. Write for the ear: short sentences, numbers spelled the way you say them. Generate a 20-word test line before the full script. Generate the rest in sections, put each on an audio track, then lower the music under the voice and check names and numbers. To time narration against a recording, see adding voiceover to a screen recording; this page does not repeat it.

We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly. Rushilo is a video editor, not a voice generator. Your AI agent calls your own OpenAI, ElevenLabs or Google Gemini key, set in the app's Settings, and the audio lands on the timeline at the position you choose. The voice is billed by your provider, not by us. Each call takes up to 4,000 characters, so a 9,000-character script is three calls, and before an agent generates speech the app asks you to approve it and shows the character count and service. Version 1.3.0 added ElevenLabs voices by name and delivery instructions; see the release notes. How your script text travels is covered in local vs cloud AI video editing.

Limits, plainly. OpenAI voices end with OpenAI's shutdown, so do not plan a long project around them. We have not confirmed that Rushilo supports every current ElevenLabs model. Tick YouTube's AI setting yourself in YouTube Studio when it applies; do not rely on the editor to do it. A Rushilo licence is one-time, from $19, for 1, 3 or 5 computers: Buy Rushilo. Setup for your own key is on the setup page. If you are choosing an editor for YouTube generally, start with the AI video editor for YouTube guide.

Will viewers mind an AI voice?

Some will, and the evidence is old, so read this as colour and not a poll. In an August 2024 r/youtubers thread of about 181 comments, a top comment (144 upvotes) said AI voice carries a stereotype of a cash grab, and another said there are viewers who “will immediately disengage as soon as they hear the AI voice”. Another commenter complained about the “same flat monotone identical tone, cadence and emotion” across a video. A July 2024 r/VideoEditing commenter warned that listeners can react badly to the whole video.

The fixes are craft, not tricks. Keep sections short, vary delivery with instructions or tone tags where your provider supports them, and fix mispronounced names before export. We have not tested which of these changes how people respond.

Frequently asked questions

Does YouTube allow AI voiceover?

YouTube's written policies do not ban AI voices. They require a label on realistic synthetic content that makes a real person appear to say something they did not, and they refuse monetisation for mass-produced or templated content, whatever voice reads it. Checked October 22, 2026 on YouTube's monetization and GenAI disclosure help pages.

Can you monetise a YouTube channel that uses an AI voice?

Possibly, if the channel passes YouTube's rules. The monetization policy excludes AI content made from generic templates that gives the impression of mass production, and allows AI that helps deliver a unique, well-researched or creative narrative. It does not name AI voices. We cannot see individual reviews, so there is no guarantee.

Do I have to label AI voiceover on YouTube?

Only when it is realistic and could mislead, such as making a real person appear to say something they did not. YouTube's list says cloning your own voice for voice overs or dubs does not need disclosure, nor do scripts or captions. If unsure, tick the setting in YouTube Studio. YouTube says disclosing alone does not limit reach or earnings.

How much does a 10-minute AI voiceover cost?

About 9,000 characters, assuming 150 words a minute and 6 characters a word. On vendor pricing pages checked October 22, 2026, one clean take costs about $0.72 on ElevenLabs v3, $0.36 on its Flash tier, about $0.14 on Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS and $0.135 on OpenAI tts-1. Retakes multiply that. Descript and CapCut do not publish per-script prices.

What is the best AI voice generator for YouTube videos?

For voice quality, reviewers such as a March 2026 moonb.io test rank ElevenLabs first, and its API costs more per script than Gemini or OpenAI. Rushilo is not a voice generator: it is an editor whose agent calls your own OpenAI, ElevenLabs or Gemini key and puts the audio on the timeline. Pick it for the editing, not the voice.

How do I add an AI voiceover to a video?

Write the script for the ear, generate a short test line, then generate the full voiceover in sections and place each on an audio track. Lower the music under the voice and check names and numbers. In Rushilo, your agent makes each section with your own key, and you approve the character count before it is spent.

Can ChatGPT do voiceovers?

ChatGPT has a voice mode, but for a video you want a text-to-speech model that returns audio you can edit. OpenAI's API offers tts-1, tts-1-hd and gpt-4o-mini-tts until its scheduled January 6, 2027 shutdown, and its guide asks for a clear disclosure that the voice is AI. We did not test ChatGPT's voice mode for export.

Will viewers dislike an AI voice?

Some will. A 2024 r/youtubers thread of about 181 comments leaned negative, with commenters describing a flat, uniform delivery and saying some viewers click away. That is two-year-old forum sentiment, not a poll. Keep sections short, vary delivery with instructions where your tool allows it, and fix mispronounced names before export.
