How to remove background noise from video (and when you can't)

Triage your noise first: steady hiss and fan noise are fixable, wind, echo and a second voice mostly are not. Then pick a tool, knowing where it processes your file.

What kind of noise do you have?

Short answer

To remove background noise from a video, first name the noise. Steady sound such as hiss, a fan or room tone is what denoisers are built for, and most editors have one. Hum needs a notch filter. Wind, echo, traffic under speech and other people talking usually cannot be cleanly separated from a voice, so those need a stronger tool or a re-record. Apply the least that works and compare with the original.

Almost every tool page opens with an upload box and skips the question that decides the result: what is the noise? A denoiser learns what steady sound looks like and subtracts it. It has a much harder time with sound that changes, or sound that overlaps the frequencies of a voice. Find your row first.

A quick way to triage: play the clip on headphones and listen to the gaps between words. If the noise is the same level and tone from start to finish, it is steady. If it rises, falls or changes character, it is not, and a plain denoiser will leave traces. If you can make out words in the background, stop reading tool pages: that is the "another voice" row, and no setting will fix it cleanly.

Steady hiss, fan, air conditioning, room tone

What usually works
A denoiser: Clean mic noise, iMovie, Descript, Adobe Podcast
Honest note
The case denoisers are built for. Still check for a watery voice.

Mains hum (a constant low buzz)

What usually works
A hum remover or notch filter
Honest note
A notch targets the hum and its harmonics, so it costs the voice very little.

Wind on the mic

What usually works
Prevention, a high-pass filter, or a re-record
Honest note
Wind is loud, changing and overlaps the voice. Denoisers rarely clean it fully.

Traffic or a crowd under speech

What usually works
Voice isolation tools, with realistic expectations
Honest note
The noise changes constantly. Expect a thinner voice, not a clean one.

Echo and reverb in the room

What usually works
A dereverb tool, or a re-record in a softer room
Honest note
Rushilo does not remove reverb. Denoisers treat echo as part of the voice.

Another person talking

What usually works
Voice isolation, or re-record
Honest note
A voice looks like a voice to every model. Separation often fails.

Music under speech

What usually works
Re-record, or get the clean voice track
Honest note
Music mixed into one track cannot be reliably pulled back out.

If your clip has no sound at all rather than unwanted sound, that is a different problem: see Mac screen recording with no audio. If you want to cut ums and uhs rather than noise, see removing filler words from audio.

Remove noise or enhance voice: what is the difference?

Removing noise subtracts unwanted sound from what you recorded. Enhancing voice goes further: it reshapes the voice, for example by adding brightness or rebuilding the thin, telephone-like top end of a phone, headset or call recording. CapCut, Canva, Adobe and Rushilo all use the word "enhance" for versions of this.

The practical difference is risk. Subtraction can only take away, so the worst case is a thin or watery voice. Enhancement that rebuilds missing frequencies is generative: the new top end is plausible, not recovered from your recording. It can add sibilance or a faint hiss on some voices. Use enhancement for a thin recording and a plain denoiser for a recording that was fine until the fan came on.

Which tools remove background noise, and what do they cost?

The column that tool pages leave out is where your file goes. Cloud tools upload your audio or video to a server; offline tools process it on your computer. For a client interview or anything private, that matters more than a few dollars. Our local versus cloud comparison covers the trade-off in more depth.

Options read on vendor pages on October 22, 2026. Prices and limits change, so check before you rely on them. We read these pages; we did not test the tools.

Apple's own Final Cut Pro guide warns that using Voice Isolation on several simultaneous audio components may result in garbled audio. Apple's pages were script-rendered when we fetched them, so we relied on search summaries for the Apple rows.

Two honest cautions about this table. First, free and paid limits move often, and several vendors changed their plans during 2026, so treat every cell as a snapshot from October 22. Second, none of these tools has a published, independent score for how well it keeps a voice natural while removing noise, so the best check is your own clip: run two tools on the same ten seconds and listen to both on headphones. Cloud tools mostly take audio, so for a video you extract the audio, clean it and put it back, which adds steps.

How do you remove steady noise in Rushilo?

We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly. Rushilo has two relevant switches, both documented in the release notes and both running on your computer with nothing uploaded.

  • Clean mic noise (version 1.1.0) is a one-click toggle that removes background hiss. It uses RNNoise, a small recurrent neural network built to remove steady background noise from speech.
  • Enhance voice (version 1.2.0) rebuilds the missing top end of phone, headset and call recordings and applies a fixed tone curve. It includes the same cleaning stage as Clean mic noise, so you do not need both.

To use it: select the clip, switch on Clean mic noise, and wait for the cleaned copy to finish (progress is shown). Turn the switch off and on to compare against the original. If you flip it during playback, you hear the change from the next play or seek. For a thin phone or call recording, use Enhance voice instead.

A connected AI agent can switch these on through the editor's clip command; the cleaning itself is done by the local model. We have no data on whether results are identical on Windows, because we have not tested it there.

What do Sound fixes do?

Version 1.3.0 added named Sound fixes: Too boomy, Muddy, Add clarity, Harsh S sounds, Uneven levels and Room hum. These are EQ, compression and notch filters, not noise removal. Room hum is a notch for mains hum and its harmonics, which suits the hum row in the table above. The Voice band only option dips music while someone speaks; it lowers music and does not clean a voice track. For that, see ducking music under dialogue.

When can no tool save the audio?

When the noise is the same kind of sound as the thing you want to keep. A second voice, a crowd, music mixed into the track and strong echo all overlap with a voice in time and frequency. Models can guess, and voice isolation tools such as Resolve Studio or Final Cut Pro guess harder than a plain denoiser, but the result can be thin, watery or garbled. One r/VideoEditing poster describes the typical case: footage shot outside with people talking around the speaker.

Your options are, in order: use the stronger tool and accept a thinner voice; cover the bad stretch with a voiceover recorded in a quiet room (see adding a voiceover); or re-record. Rushilo is the wrong tool for competing voices, wind or echo. A denoiser that is honest about this is more useful than one that promises everything. If the clip matters and the noise is bad, ten minutes re-recording usually beats an hour of settings.

How do you avoid a robotic voice?

Users on r/VideoEditing report that pushing one AI audio tool too far "starts to sound a bit robotic". That matches how these tools work: the harder they subtract, the more of the voice goes with the noise.

  • Apply the least that works, then compare with the original.
  • Listen on headphones before you export, not on laptop speakers.
  • Process the original recording, not an export that was already processed.
  • Leave a little room tone. Total silence between words sounds more artificial than a low, steady hush.

Can you prevent it next time?

Mostly, yes, and it beats any tool. Move the mic closer to your mouth, switch off the fan or air conditioning, and record in a soft room with curtains or a rug. Record ten seconds of room tone before you start, which helps you judge noise later. If you are making a demo, the product demo guide covers setting up the recording.

Frequently asked questions

How can I remove background noise from a video for free?

Free routes exist, with limits. iMovie on a Mac has a Reduce background noise checkbox with a slider. CapCut says its noise reduction is free, though reviews report paid limits on some platforms. Adobe Podcast and Descript list free tiers with caps. Check each cap on the vendor page before you start, because limits change.

Can ChatGPT remove background noise from video?

No. ChatGPT is a text assistant and does not process your audio. You need a noise reduction tool: an editor feature, a cloud cleaner or a desktop app. An AI agent connected to an editor can switch a tool on, but the cleaning is done by the editor's own audio model, not the chat model.

What is the difference between removing noise and enhancing voice?

Noise removal reduces unwanted sound already in the recording. Enhancing voice also reshapes the voice, for example by brightening it or rebuilding the thin top end of a phone recording. Enhancement is generative, so the rebuilt sound is plausible, not recovered, and can add sibilance. Listen for it before you export.

Does Rushilo remove background noise?

Yes, for steady noise, with limits. Clean mic noise, added in version 1.1.0, uses a small neural noise model on your computer to reduce steady hiss and similar sound. It does not separate a voice from other people talking or from music, and we have not run a listening test, so judge it on your own clips.

Does DaVinci Resolve's Voice Isolation come in the free version?

Blackmagic lists DaVinci Neural Engine AI voice isolation among the features on its Resolve Studio page, the paid upgrade, and the free Resolve page does not list it. Other free noise tools may exist, but we did not confirm them on a vendor page. Check Blackmagic's current feature list before buying.

Can you remove background noise but keep the voice?

For steady noise, yes: denoisers keep the speech and reduce the constant sound under it. For another person talking, music or sudden sounds, a plain denoiser usually cannot tell them from your voice. Voice isolation tools try harder, but all of them can leave a thin or garbled voice when the noise is loud.

What is the best tool to remove background noise from video?

Pick by noise type. For steady hiss or a fan on a clip you are already editing, Rushilo's Clean mic noise runs offline on Mac and Windows. For speech buried in traffic or a crowd, Resolve Studio, Final Cut Pro or Adobe Podcast may do more. Rushilo is a poor fit for competing voices.

Will noise removal make my voice sound robotic?

It can. Aggressive reduction removes parts of the voice along with the noise, and users on r/VideoEditing report that pushing one AI audio tool too far starts to sound a bit robotic. Apply the least that works, compare with the original, and listen on headphones before you export.
