Video aspect ratio calculator: fit and crop

Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor to get the aspect ratio. Contain fits the whole image inside the target; cover fills the target and crops the excess.

How to use it

  1. 01

    Set the source

Enter the encoded picture width and height, not the screen's apparent workspace size.

  2. 02

    Set the destination

Enter a canvas size or choose a common preset. Proportional suggestions round to even pixels.

  3. 03

    Choose a composition

Compare contain and cover. The diagram shows a centered crop; it does not detect faces or preserve important controls automatically.

A worked example

A 1920 by 1080 source contained inside 1080 by 1920 is 1080 by 607.5 before raster rounding. Cover retains about 31.6% of the source width in view.

What to check

  • The figures are geometry, not rendered video. Actual pixel rounding can differ between editors.
  • Even dimensions are useful for common encoding workflows but do not guarantee compatibility with every codec.
  • Check titles, controls and captions after changing the composition.

Questions

Will changing aspect ratio stretch my video?

It can if you resize width and height independently. Contain and cover preserve the source proportions; one adds empty space and the other crops.

Can a centered crop follow a person or cursor?

No. This is a geometry calculator. Position and tracking need a separate editing decision.
