Filler word counter for transcripts and SRT files
Paste a transcript or load an SRT, VTT or text file. The counter totals filler words, gives the rate per 100 words (and per minute when the file has timestamps), and highlights each one. Everything runs in your browser.

How to use it
- 01
Add the transcript
Paste text or choose a .txt, .srt or .vtt file. A timed file also gives a per minute rate and the densest 30 second stretches.
- 02
Check the word lists
Edit the filler list and the possible filler list. Separate entries with commas or new lines; multi-word entries such as you know are supported.
- 03
Read the numbers
Compare the rate per 100 words across recordings, then use the highlighted transcript to see where the fillers cluster.
A worked example
A 60 word answer with 3 fillers is 5 fillers per 100 words. If the cues span 30 seconds, the same 3 fillers are 6 per minute. The two rates answer different questions: density of speech and pace of interruptions.
What to check
- Words like like, so and right are often ordinary words, so they are counted separately as possible fillers and left out of the filler total. Move them into the filler list if they are fillers in your recording.
- Be cautious with automatic transcripts: Whisper and many other transcribers tend to drop um and uh, so an auto transcript can undercount. For an accurate count, use a verbatim transcript or listen to the audio.
- Timed windows place each filler by its position inside the cue, an estimate, not a word-level timestamp. A filler that straddles two cues is not matched as one phrase.
- There is no universal good rate. Use the numbers to compare your own takes, not as a pass or fail score.
Questions
Why does my auto transcript show so few fillers?
Many speech recognizers, Whisper included, tend to leave out um and uh when they transcribe. Treat a count from an auto transcript as a lower bound and check against the audio if the number matters.
Are like and so counted as fillers?
Not by default. They are counted separately as possible fillers because they are often real words. Move them to the filler list if they are fillers in your speech.
Is my transcript uploaded?
No. The text is analysed in your browser and is not sent to a server.
