What is a Reddit story video?
Short answer
A Reddit story video is a post turned into narration plus visuals. Reddit's User Agreement says authors keep ownership of their posts and Reddit holds a licence, so reading one word for word raises copyright and consent questions. YouTube lists scrolling text and templated storylines as not monetisable. The safer route is to use a story as inspiration, rewrite it, anonymise it, credit the source and add original visuals. This is not legal advice.
A Reddit story video takes a post, usually a first-person story, and delivers it as a short vertical video: a narrator reads it, and something fills the screen while they do. The genres people name most are relationship drama, petty revenge and family stories. They spread on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels because a story with a conflict hooks a viewer in the first sentence.
Two things get skipped in most guides. First, the post belongs to someone. Second, the most common visual treatment, scrolling text or gameplay under a voice, is the pattern a platform policy singles out. This page covers the format, then those two questions with dated sources, then an original alternative. We are not lawyers, and nothing here is legal advice. Nobody can promise views either, and nothing below does.
Why does the format keep appearing? A first-person story with a conflict gives a narrator a built-in hook, and the structure is easy to repeat. That is also its weakness. Viewers have said in public threads that they are tired of the genre, particularly stories that never finish and fabricated ones presented as true. A video that stands out does so through the rewrite, the character and the ending, not through a faster voice.
How do you make a Reddit story video?
The steps are the same whichever look you choose. Step two is the one that decides whether the video is yours.
- Pick a story idea. Look for a clear conflict, a turn and an ending. Stories that trail off leave viewers hunting for the rest, and viewers complain about exactly that.
- Rewrite it. Write your own version from the beats, change identifying details and give it a proper ending. Do not paste the original text into a voice tool.
- Add a voice. Record yourself or use a synthetic voice. Our AI voiceover guide prices the options and quotes YouTube's wording on voices.
- Add visuals. Choose text over footage or an animated scene (compared below).
- Finish and check. Cut, caption, add sound only where something changes, and watch the whole video once before posting.
A practical note on length: most short story videos fit between one and two minutes of narration, which is roughly 150 to 300 words at a natural speaking pace (our planning figure, not a platform rule). If your rewrite runs far longer, cut a beat rather than speeding up the voice. Read the script aloud once before you generate or record anything, because lines that look fine on the page often sound stiff when spoken.
On the editing side, keep it plain. Burned-in captions help viewers who watch on mute. Add a sound effect only where something on screen changes, such as a door or a message arriving. Constant effects make a video feel templated, which is the opposite of what you want here. Our guide to adding sound effects covers the mechanics, and cutting long video into shorts covers the vertical format.

Are Reddit stories copyrighted?
The author of a post generally still owns their writing, and Reddit's own terms say so. Its User Agreement, effective July 1, 2026 and last revised May 26, 2026, says: "You retain any ownership rights you have in Your Content, but you grant Reddit the following license to use that Content." That licence is worldwide, non-exclusive and sublicensable, and it goes to Reddit. It does not pass rights on to you.
The agreement also limits what users may do with other people's content. Section 3 says that without Reddit's written agreement you may not "commercially exploit the Services or Content" or "modify, prepare derivative works of" them. That clause sits in your agreement with Reddit and has a carve-out for what applicable law permits, so it is not a verdict on any one video. But it is the wording closest to a monetised story channel. We read it on October 22, 2026; reread it before you rely on it.

Forum threads on this are a mix. In one, a reply says "It's not copyright infringement because there is no copyright," and another in the same thread says it is infringement. Neither is authority. The reasonable reading is that a post is still its author's work, so reading it aloud word for word is copying text. Beyond copyright there is consent: a real story can identify a real person even without a name. If you want to read how fair use is described, the US Copyright Office has a page; we did not read it for this article.
Where do you find stories responsibly?
Treat Reddit as a source of ideas, not a script library. A story with a strong turn is a prompt for your own version. That version is what you voice, and it is safer on rights and consent for the same reason.
- Public posts only. Never use private communities, direct messages or screenshots of conversations.
- Change what identifies people. Names, workplaces, towns, ages that narrow it down, usernames, photos.
- Change the plot details, not just the nouns. If the author would recognise their own story, you have not transformed it.
- Credit the community. Say the idea came from a public discussion, and link where it fits. Never name a user without asking.
- Ask when it matters. If you want to keep the story close to the original, ask the author first and keep their reply.
- Label fiction as fiction. Many such stories cannot be verified, per viewers' comments. We did not measure how many.
What do YouTube and TikTok say about this format?
YouTube's channel monetization policies, read October 22, 2026, ask for content that is your original creation and say, "If you borrow content from someone else, you need to change it significantly to make it your own." Among examples that are not monetisable it lists "Image slideshows, templated storylines, or scrolling text with minimal or no narrative, commentary, or educational value" and "Videos where characters are put in the same situation over and over again with the same outcome."
The same page describes what is welcome: a series that follows a set of characters across episodes, where each video has a distinct storyline, focus or concept. On reused content, it says the policy applies to your channel as a whole, so monetisation may be removed from the entire channel. A set of copied stories can therefore put every video on the channel at risk, not only the copied ones. For voice rules specifically, see our voiceover guide.
How do you turn a text story into an animated scene?
An animated scene gives viewers something that is yours: a character they recognise, in scenes you composed, telling a story you rewrote. The method is the same whatever tools you use.
1. Extract the beats
Boil the story down to five to eight beats: setup, conflict, escalation, turn, payoff. Write each beat in your own words. This is also your rewrite, so change the details as you go.
2. Design one character
Pick a lead who reads in one frame: a clear silhouette, a distinct outfit, one memorable feature. Decide the look once and reuse it. Without a locked design the character drifts between shots, which is the usual way these videos look cheap.
3. Make each scene as its own shot
Generate or draw each beat as a separate shot, reusing the same character description and reference images each time. Keep shots short, and check each one against the character reference before moving on.
4. Add voice and finish
Lay your narration over the shots, add captions, and use sound only where something changes on screen. If you finish in a local editor, our AI video editor page explains how Rushilo works. We make Rushilo, so weigh that mention accordingly.
The course we sell, AI Video Empire, teaches this format: animated story videos with a consistent designed character, no face on camera, for TikTok, Reels and Shorts. Its public module titles include mining Reddit for storylines, turning a found story into a story spec, the cast lock and QA before you post. It is a one-time payment of $27 with lifetime access. The tools it uses, Nano Banana Pro, Higgsfield with Seedance, Claude Code and CapCut, each have their own paid plan. We sell the course, so weigh this section accordingly, and remember that nobody can promise views.

Frequently asked questions
Are Reddit stories copyrighted?
Usually the author still owns their post. Reddit's User Agreement, last revised May 26, 2026, says users retain ownership of their content and grant Reddit a licence to use it. That licence is Reddit's, not yours, so a post is still someone else's writing. Fair use is decided case by case. This is not legal advice.
Is it legal to use Reddit stories on TikTok?
There is no one-line yes. Reading a post word for word copies someone else's text and may identify a real person, so it raises copyright and consent questions. Rewriting the story, removing identifying details, crediting the source and adding your own visuals lowers the risk. We could not read TikTok's own policy pages. This is not legal advice.
Can you monetize Reddit stories on YouTube?
Only if the video is yours in a meaningful way. YouTube's policy says borrowed content must be changed significantly, and lists scrolling text with minimal narrative and templated storylines as not monetisable. Reused content is judged across the whole channel, so monetisation can be removed from the entire channel. Policy checked October 22, 2026.
How do you make a Reddit story video?
Pick a story idea, rewrite it in your own words with details changed, record or generate a voiceover, add visuals such as an animated scene, then cut, caption and check it before posting. Skipping the rewrite is the step that causes most rights and platform problems. The sections above cover each step.
Do you need permission to use a Reddit story?
The safest path is to ask the author, or to write your own version so you are not reproducing their text. Reddit's User Agreement bars commercially exploiting Content or preparing derivative works from it without Reddit's written agreement, though it also allows for what applicable law permits. This is not legal advice.
Why do Reddit story videos use gameplay in the background?
It is a retention habit: something moves while a voice reads. The catch is that YouTube's monetisation policy flags scrolling text and templated storylines with minimal narrative or value. Gameplay under a read-aloud post adds little original work. An animated scene you designed yourself adds original visual work and a character viewers can recognise.
What is the best way to make Reddit story videos without showing your face?
For text over gameplay, generator tools are faster, but that is the template style YouTube describes. For an original look, AI Video Empire, the course we sell, teaches animated story videos with a designed character and no face on camera. The tools it uses each have their own paid plan, and nobody can promise views.
Are most Reddit stories made up?
Many are fictional or cannot be verified, according to viewers' own comments, though we did not measure any rate. If your video is fiction, present it as fiction. Presenting an invented story as a true one misleads viewers, and some audiences already say they are tired of the genre.
