Free loudness checker: LUFS and sample peak
The checker decodes mono/stereo audio at 48 kHz and measures integrated loudness using K-weighting and absolute/relative gates. Sample peak is reported separately; it is not a true-peak measurement.

How to use it
- 01
Choose an excerpt
Open browser-decodable audio or video up to 64 MB and 5 minutes. No file is uploaded.
- 02
Read the measurements
Integrated LUFS describes the gated programme level. Sample peak describes the largest decoded sample.
- 03
Plan, then remeasure
Enter the target appropriate to your destination. Compare the suggested gain with sample headroom, then verify any processed export with a suitable meter.
A worked example
A file measured at -22 LUFS needs +6 dB to reach -16 LUFS in a simple gain calculation. That does not prove the file has six decibels of peak headroom.
What to check
- Supports mono and stereo, not surround or object audio. Clips shorter than 400 ms and material below the gates have no integrated reading.
- This browser implementation is not a certified compliance meter. It does not measure true peak, loudness range or platform playback normalization.
- Decoded/resampled audio can differ from a native file measurement. A true-peak limiter and a new measurement may be needed before delivery.
Questions
Is sample peak the same as true peak?
No. Reconstructed or encoded audio can have peaks between samples. This tool does not estimate those peaks, so sample headroom is not a guarantee against clipping after processing.
Which LUFS target should I choose?
Use your destination's current delivery guidance. The editable starting value here is an example, not a universal requirement for every video or podcast.
