How do you stop a screen recording on a Mac?
Short answer
To stop a Mac screen recording, click the stop button in the menu bar or press Command-Control-Esc, according to Apple Support. If the button is missing, press Shift-Command-5 again, a community tip. If Shift-Command-5 does nothing, check System Settings for a conflicting shortcut. Apple documents no force stop for the built-in recorder and no cause for recordings that end on their own.
Apple's recording guide gives two ways to stop a recording started from the Screenshot toolbar, which you open with Shift-Command-5. Click the stop button in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc. The finished file appears as the floating thumbnail and is saved as a .mov, to the desktop by default unless you picked a different Save to location, per Apple's screenshot and recording page.

Apple's page also describes a second recorder. If you started with File, New Screen Recording in QuickTime Player (or Control-Command-N), you will see a Screen Recording window instead of the toolbar, and QuickTime Player performs the recording. Apple gives the same stop instructions for both.
What if the stop button is missing or stuck?
Start with the shortcut, because it does not depend on seeing the menu bar. Press Command-Control-Esc. It is the one to try if the menu bar is hidden, crowded with other icons or simply not where you expect it.
If the shortcut does nothing, press Shift-Command-5 again. A community answer in an Apple Support Communities thread says this brings the toolbar back with a stop button. That is a user report, not Apple guidance, and we did not reproduce it. It is cheap to try because it only reopens the toolbar.
The same thread shows why people hunt for this. A user wrote that having to click the stop button meant trimming “the last two seconds of each video.” Stopping with the keyboard shortcut still leaves a small tail, so the fix for that is a quick trim afterwards, covered in trimming a Mac screen recording.
Before you try any fix, work out which recorder you started. Apple says that if you see the onscreen controls, the Screenshot app is recording. If you see a Screen Recording window, QuickTime Player is. Third-party tools such as OBS or a paid recorder have their own stop controls and settings, so the Apple steps on this page apply to the first two only.
Why is Shift-Command-5 not working?
Apple lists Shift-Command-5 as the shortcut to take a screenshot or make a screen recording in macOS Mojave or later, on its keyboard shortcuts page. When it does nothing, work through these in order, cheapest first.
- Open Screenshot another way. Apple says you can open the Screenshot app from Spotlight. If the toolbar appears, recording works and only the shortcut is broken.
- Check for a conflict. Open System Settings, click Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts. Apple's conflicting shortcut guide says a warning icon appears next to conflicting shortcuts.
- Look at the Screenshots category. Apple says to choose Apple menu, System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, then Screenshots, which is where those shortcuts can be changed. Confirm the screenshot and recording shortcut shown there is the one you are pressing. We did not test how each macOS version labels these rows.
Community and vendor guides, which are not Apple sources, say the usual culprit is another app that has claimed the same key combination. Check anything that registers global shortcuts, such as a window manager or clipboard tool, and change its binding rather than Apple's.
Why does a screen recording stop by itself?
Honest answer
Apple documents no cause for a recording that ends on its own. The list below comes from users and vendor blogs, and we did not reproduce any of it.
Work through the causes in order of how cheap each is to test.
Low disk space
- Quick check
- Check free space before a long take
- Evidence
- Vendor blogs
Save folder in cloud sync
- Quick check
- Save to a local folder, not iCloud, OneDrive or similar
- Evidence
- One Reddit user report
Mac sleeps or the lid closes
- Quick check
- Keep the Mac awake and plugged in while recording
- Evidence
- Vendor blogs
Overheating
- Quick check
- Close heavy apps, record a shorter take
- Evidence
- Vendor blogs
App crash or permission loss
- Quick check
- Re-check Screen Recording permission in System Settings
- Evidence
- Vendor blogs
| Reported cause | Quick check | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Low disk space | Check free space before a long take | Vendor blogs |
| Save folder in cloud sync | Save to a local folder, not iCloud, OneDrive or similar | One Reddit user report |
| Mac sleeps or the lid closes | Keep the Mac awake and plugged in while recording | Vendor blogs |
| Overheating | Close heavy apps, record a shorter take | Vendor blogs |
| App crash or permission loss | Re-check Screen Recording permission in System Settings | Vendor blogs |
The one first-hand report we found is on r/mac, where a user whose recordings ended at exactly 1 minute 40 seconds said they fixed it by moving the save location from a OneDrive folder to the actual hard drive. That is a single account. If your recordings stop at a consistent length, change the Save to location in the Shift-Command-5 Options menu first, since Apple documents that setting. Then record a 3-minute test. If it ends again at the same length, the folder was not the cause, and the next cheapest check is free disk space.
Our own advice, not Apple's: do not trust a take you never played back. After any unexpected stop, open the file immediately to see how much was saved, before you start the next take over it. For long takes, split the work: record shorter takes rather than one long one, and check the file plays to the end before you close anything. If the audio is the problem instead, see why a Mac recording has no audio.
Can you force stop a screen recording?
Not in any way Apple documents for the built-in recorder. Apple's recording guide gives the menu bar button and Command-Control-Esc, and nothing beyond them. It does list Option-Command-Esc to force quit an app, on the keyboard shortcuts page above, and that applies to a third-party recorder that has frozen.
We do not recommend force quitting while a take matters, because we have not tested whether the partial file survives. Try Command-Control-Esc and Shift-Command-5 again, wait a few seconds for the floating thumbnail, and check the save folder before you give up on the take.
What to do after the recording stops
Play the file to the end before you delete anything, and check the end for the stop-click tail. Recordings begin with “Screen Recording” followed by the date and time, so they are easy to find in the save folder.
If the picture looks soft after you share it, that is an export problem, covered in why a screen recording looks blurry after export. If you are planning a longer demo and want fewer retakes, read how to record a product demo video.
Where Rushilo fits
We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly. Rushilo's 1.3.1 release notes list a screen recorder for macOS that captures the screen, a window or an area, with camera, microphone and computer sound, and a recording editor with split, cut, zoom, mute and speed. Screen recording is macOS only.
This page does not document how Rushilo's recorder stops, because we did not verify that and will not guess. If you only need a clean stop and a quick trim, the built-in tools above are free and enough. A recorder that edits in the same place helps when you record often and cut every take. For other recorders, see Screen Studio alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
How can I stop screen recording on a Mac?
Click the stop button in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc. Apple Support documents both for the Screenshot toolbar opened with Shift-Command-5. The recording then saves as a .mov file, to the desktop by default unless you chose another Save to location. If you cannot see the button, try the steps in this guide.
Is there a shortcut to stop screen recording on a Mac?
Yes. Apple Support lists Command-Control-Esc as the shortcut to stop a screen recording. Command-Shift-Esc is a common typo that does not do it. One user on Apple's support forum reported the shortcut stopped working after a macOS upgrade, so keep the menu bar button as a fallback and check your keyboard shortcut settings.
How do I force stop screen recording on a Mac?
Apple documents no force stop for the built-in recorder. It does document Option-Command-Esc to force quit an unresponsive app, which suits a third-party recorder. For the Screenshot toolbar, try Command-Control-Esc, then Shift-Command-5 again. We have not tested what a force quit does to an unsaved recording.
Why is Shift-Command-5 not working?
Apple lists Shift-Command-5 as the Screenshot shortcut in macOS Mojave or later. Apple's keyboard guide says a warning icon marks conflicting shortcuts in System Settings under Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts. Community and vendor guides report that another app taking the shortcut is the usual cause. You can also open Screenshot from Spotlight.
Why does my screen recording stop automatically on my Mac?
Apple documents no cause. Users and vendors report low disk space, a save folder inside a cloud-synced location, the Mac sleeping, overheating and a crashed app. One Reddit user fixed recordings that ended at 1 minute 40 seconds by moving the save location out of a OneDrive folder. Treat these as reports, not confirmed causes.
My screen recording is stuck on my Mac. What can I do to fix it?
Press Command-Control-Esc first. Then click the menu bar stop button. If neither responds, press Shift-Command-5 to bring the toolbar back. Apple documents no deeper fix for the built-in recorder. As a last step, force quit the app that is recording using Option-Command-Esc, as Apple describes for any unresponsive app.
How do I exit screen capture on my Mac?
Before you start recording, press Esc to cancel, as Apple Support says. Once recording has begun, click the menu bar stop button or press Command-Control-Esc. The Shift-Command-5 toolbar is part of the same Screenshot app, so Esc is the documented way out before you click Record.
What is the best way to avoid a stop-click at the end of a Mac recording?
Stop with Command-Control-Esc, then trim the tail in QuickTime Player or Finder, which is free and quick. If you also want to split, cut and speed up the recording in one place, Rushilo has a Mac recorder with an editing lane. We make Rushilo, and it records on macOS only.
