Can ChatGPT edit videos? What it can and cannot do in 2026

ChatGPT does not play, trim or render video in a normal chat. It edits when it operates a tool that can. Here are the routes that exist, what each needs, and where each stops.

Can ChatGPT edit videos by itself?

Short answer

Not in plain chat. OpenAI's upload page lists documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images and audio, but no video type. ChatGPT can edit footage when it operates a tool: ChatGPT Work or Codex in the desktop app, which can use local files, or a connector to a video editor. It no longer makes video with Sora, which OpenAI discontinued on April 26, 2026. Checked October 20, 2026.

“Edit a video with ChatGPT” can mean four different things, and most pages that rank for this question blur them. The table separates them. Everything in it comes from OpenAI's own help and documentation pages, read on October 20, 2026. OpenAI changes these surfaces often, so check your own Settings before relying on a plan detail.

The routes to editing video with ChatGPT. From OpenAI's documentation, checked October 20, 2026.

In plain chat, ChatGPT is still useful before and after the edit: it can turn a transcript into a paper edit, suggest which sections to cut, write titles and chapter markers, and draft captions as text. What it cannot do in chat is open your video file, trim it and hand back a new one. The AI video editing prompts page has briefs for that planning step.

Can you upload a video to ChatGPT?

Not as a listed file type. OpenAI's upload page lists documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images and audio. It says WebM and MP4 files identified as video are not accepted as audio uploads. We have not tested every workaround, so we say what the page lists rather than that every upload fails.

Audio is the practical route for planning. Export the audio track, upload it on a paid plan (up to 512 MB per file), and ask for a timestamped transcript and a cut list. OpenAI notes that transcripts may contain errors and that speaker identification can be unreliable, so check the times against the recording. Free accounts get three file uploads a day and no audio uploads.

ChatGPT's data analysis tool can run Python, but OpenAI says that environment cannot make external web requests, and its documentation does not mention video tools. We would not plan an edit around it.

What changed: ChatGPT Work and Codex on the desktop

The bigger change in 2026 is the desktop app. OpenAI says ChatGPT Work can use local files, apps and the browser on the desktop app, and its pricing page lists Work and Codex in every plan from Free to Enterprise, with usage limits that differ by plan. That means ChatGPT can reach video files on your computer, as long as there is a tool there that can actually edit them.

The tool is the part people skip. One creator who demonstrated editing in ChatGPT Work replied to viewers that it relies on FFmpeg; that is a creator report, not something we found in OpenAI's documentation. A Codex tutorial with 203,000+ views renders its edit locally with a render plugin and FFmpeg. A commenter on that video put it simply: “you didn't mention that we need whisper, ffmpeg for editing”.

Codex can also call MCP servers. Per OpenAI's MCP documentation, the ChatGPT desktop app, Codex CLI and IDE extension share one config.toml, and the default tool timeout is 60 seconds, which is short for a video export. The full setup is in the Codex video editing guide.

Can ChatGPT connect to a video editor?

Yes, through plugins and MCP connectors, but the rules on the web are narrower than many vendor pages suggest. OpenAI's help page says full custom MCP support on ChatGPT web is for Business and Enterprise or Edu customers, and Pro users can connect custom servers with read and fetch permissions only. Some editor vendors describe a broader setup; treat OpenAI's page and your own Settings as the source of record.

ChatGPT on the web also needs to reach the connector over the internet: OpenAI's developer docs require a public HTTPS endpoint or a secure tunnel. That suits hosted editors, where your footage is uploaded to the vendor. Several hosted editors now advertise a ChatGPT or Codex connection; we have not tested them. Before trusting any connector with real footage, run the MCP evaluation checklist on a short clip.

Can ChatGPT make a video? Sora is gone

Not with OpenAI's own model any more. OpenAI says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API on September 24, 2026. Pages that still tell you to “use Sora in ChatGPT” are out of date.

Video generation inside ChatGPT now comes from third-party plugins, each with its own model and pricing. Generating a clip is a different job from editing your own recording: a generator makes new footage, while editing keeps your footage and decides what stays.

Can ChatGPT edit videos for free?

Partly. Planning in chat is free within limits, and OpenAI includes Codex and Work in the Free plan with usage limits. The free parts stop at the tool: FFmpeg is free, but most editors that connect to ChatGPT have their own price, and a hosted editor may charge per minute or per credit. Free accounts also cannot upload audio for a transcript. For what a full setup costs, see the BYOK editing cost guide.

Using Codex with Rushilo

We make Rushilo, so weigh this section accordingly. Rushilo is a desktop video editor for Mac and Windows that your own agent drives through a local MCP server. Codex connects with a [mcp_servers.rushilo] block in ~/.codex/config.toml, and Rushilo's setup sets a 3,600 second tool timeout so long exports do not hit the 60 second default. The agent reads a word-level transcript, cuts on a timeline you can watch, and every change sits in one undo history with yours. Rushilo ships no AI of its own and sells no credits; Codex usage counts against your ChatGPT plan.

The app must stay open while the agent works. Connect it with the setup guide, or Buy Rushilo if a reviewable timeline is what your Codex setup is missing. If you use Claude instead, the same answer for Claude is in Can Claude edit videos?

Which route should you pick?

Plan an edit or write captions as text

Use
Plain chat with a transcript

Generate a new clip from a prompt

Use
A video generator plugin, checked for price per clip

Edit your own footage in a browser editor

Use
A hosted editor with a ChatGPT connector

Edit your own footage on your computer, reviewably

Use
Codex or ChatGPT Work with a local editor or FFmpeg
A starting point. Our judgement from the documentation above, not a benchmark.

Whichever route you choose, review the result. As one commenter on a 203,000-view tutorial put it, if you know exactly what you want, you can be frustrated with output that does not match your intent. A timeline you can scrub and undo makes that review faster than re-rendering a whole file.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT edit videos for you?

Not in a plain chat: OpenAI's upload page lists documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images and audio, with no video type. ChatGPT can plan an edit, read a transcript and write captions as text. It edits footage when it operates a tool, such as ChatGPT Work or Codex in the desktop app, or a connected video editor.

Can ChatGPT edit a video I upload?

OpenAI's help page, checked October 20, 2026, does not list video among supported uploads, and says WebM and MP4 files identified as video are not accepted as audio uploads. Audio files up to 512 MB work on paid plans. For video files, use the desktop app with local file access, or an editor that connects to ChatGPT.

Can ChatGPT make videos now that Sora is gone?

Not natively. OpenAI says the Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API on September 24, 2026. Video generation inside ChatGPT now comes from third-party plugins with their own pricing. Generating a new clip is also not the same as editing your own footage.

Can ChatGPT edit videos for free?

Partly. OpenAI's pricing page says ChatGPT Work and Codex are included in Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans, with usage limits that vary by plan. Free accounts can upload three files a day and cannot upload audio. Any editor ChatGPT connects to has its own price.

Can ChatGPT connect to a video editor?

Yes, in two ways. In ChatGPT on the web, plugins and custom MCP servers reach hosted editors, but OpenAI says full custom MCP is for Business and Enterprise or Edu, with Pro limited to read and fetch. On the desktop, Codex reads local MCP servers from one config file shared by the app, CLI and IDE extension.

What is the best way to edit videos with ChatGPT?

If you pay for ChatGPT and want Codex to edit footage on your own computer, Rushilo is a Mac and Windows editor that Codex drives over a local MCP server, with a visible timeline and one undo history. It ships no AI of its own and sells no credits. If you prefer a browser editor reachable from ChatGPT, compare hosted connectors.

Does ChatGPT actually watch my footage?

Not in plain chat, where video is not a listed upload. When it operates an editor, it usually works from a transcript and sampled frames rather than watching continuously. In Rushilo, the agent reads a word-level transcript and requests labeled frames from the timeline. Review the cut yourself, because transcripts can contain errors.

Which AI is best to edit videos?

It depends on the job. To generate clips from text, use a video generator. To edit your own footage with an AI you already pay for, pair Codex or Claude Code with an editor it can operate, such as Rushilo, which works with both and any MCP client. We have not run a head-to-head benchmark, so judge on your own footage.
